2 Main Reasons Why I Seldom Guest Post in Other Blogs

Guest Posting

Guest posting is one good way to drive traffic to your blog. If you can do it good and well, tons of traffic you will receive after the other blogger published your guest post. However, it’s not easy to guest post in the correct way. I have only written two guest post so far since I started this blog in July. You can say I am not active in guest posting which seems to be a loss. What did I lose? It should be loss of exposure, loss of traffic and loss of networking.

Why aren’t you active posting in other blogs Lye? Well there are two main reasons that prevent me from submitting my guest post to other blogs:

  • I don’t have a plan

Yes, I never think of planning. Guest posting is not just writing a post, submit the post for review and waiting for it to be published. You will then expect large traffic to visit your blog. No, it doesn’t work that way. You need to have a plan when you do guest posting. Why is that so? Unless you are guest posting in some big blogs, you will not see hundreds or thousands of visitors to your blog. Normally, you will be disappointed to see your visitors increase by tens or twenties if you guest posted in small blogs.

Lets imagine your guest post attracted thousands of visitors to your site but it doesn’t end there. Are you able to convert them to become your loyal readers? Before you submit a guest post, you need to plan a series of posts which is related to your guest post topics. If you are confident that thousands will visit your blog after your guest post is published, you need to prepare for it. Post the subsequent series of post to provide more value to your visitors. Thus keeping them stick to your blog and become your core audience.

  • I want to save the best for my blog

It’s a big challenge for bloggers to write a good post consistently. I am no different. Maybe I can write a good post, but I don’t think it is excellent yet.  If I am finding a struggle to think I have written the best post over here, what good does it have on me if I submit my post in other blogs. If that’s the best post I can come out with, will it be better to publish the post over here rather than in other blogs.

I am not as productive as Onibalusi Bamidele who has lots of creativity in his post ideas and has produced 270 guest post per year. If I need to spend the time to brainstorm an excellent guest post, I would rather spend the time to publish it here so that my readers can benefit from it.  If the post is excellent, I am sure the readers will promote the post for me.

Wrap Up

This is not a post against guest posting. In fact I believe guest posting is a good way to drive traffic to your blog if you make good use of it correctly. It is also good for your brand exposure and more back links. My main purpose is to share with you, if you are having trouble in coming out a post to your own blog that can go viral, there is no reason why you should spend your precious time writing a guest post for other blogs. I don’t think it is going to help you much. You should concentrate on your blog growth instead of expecting a big jump in traffic once you submit a guest post which is not the highest quality.

    Hi Lye,

I’m not a big guest post guy. I see the benefits but feel readers tend to trust home-based bloggers the most.

I will usually read a guest post but the main reason I visit a blog is for the blogger’s insight. It’s their content portal, their one-stop-shopping central, and I prefer to take in their insight :)

    Thanks for sharing!

      Hi Ryan,

I understand what you mean here. I would not prefer to visit a blog full of guest post and the original author disappear from the frame. That would turn me off a bit.

      Thanks for the comments.

    HI Lye

I tend to agree with Ryan that I expect the blog owner to be posting when I visit. Although I sometimes have a pleasant surprise and find one of my favourite bloggers guest posting on another blog I visit regularly.

Have visited 3 blogs today and found the same person guest posting. All excellent articles and I enjoyed that they were there posting. If a site has too many guest posts it’s hard to build up a rapport as may not know the person who is guest posting. On the other hand, it has introduced me to some great bloggers too.

I have been asked to guest post on other people’s blogs. Have accepted one invitation but my main concern is whether my article will come up to the blog owners expectations as they are a brilliant writer!

You have to do what is right for your blog. There are advantages to guest posting but if it is to the detriment of your own blog; I can see why you don’t very often. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi Pat,

I have been looking forward to your guest ever since i know about it. Whether to guest post or not, it’s entirely up to individual. For me i find it hard to submit a guest post to other blog just while i am establishing my voice in my own blog.

I am glad that you understand the decision behind. Thanks a lot for the support.

great thoughts i absolutely agree with many points , it is important to know that without a good plan nothing will be good as you want , my best points are how everyone has to save energy and thought and everything to have a better result , that is powerful and exactly right !!! loved how we can prevent or keep some remarks to be sharing it later on with audience and write them in comments , that will show how wise and interesting is that person and make people communicate more with him/her !! great topic , thank You

      Hi Rahul

Really please that you resonate with the points above. There are follow ups whenever we submit a guest post. That is to keep the visitors stick to our blog when they pay a visit. This is the real challenge behind a guest post.

Thanks for visiting and supporting as always.

Actually, I think one has to have a plan if they’re actively looking to guest post. If someone asks you, then you don’t have to have a plan, you just have to have an idea of what to write about. I don’t guest post unless I’m asked; way too much time writing for others and myself as it is.

Absolutely, if you end up finding no time to write for own self then it will be contradicting to write for others.

I haven’t opened my blog yet to guest posts…so I’ll have to get back to you on that.

Regarding *writing* guest posts…ah, I think that we can all offer sterling goodies that simply attract others to learn more about us (ie, it’s simply spreading out attractive breadcrumbs across to the Internet).

So my take would be, writing for someone else won’t detract from writing for meself. YMMV, of course.

      Hi Barbara,

I agree with you on this; it’s a good way to spread our brand and exposure. If one can juggle well between his own blog and guest posting for others, by all means he can go ahead and do that.

Thanks for the comments. Talk soon.

    Nice article there Lye!

As of now I have submitted just two guest posts and unfortunately at this time, I just don’t have the time. There are far too many distractions in the way (not even connected with blogging), which can not be ignored. The two reasons you have provided are valid as well, especially for the second. I believe that if you really want to make an impact when guest posting, submitting your top quality content is a must. If you are not prepared to make that “sacrifice” then it is better to not guest post. Just my two cents though.

Precisely, not only we are being distracted by our blog but offline we need to deal with plenty of things. Sure there will be a lot of distractions. We just need to prioritize our task ahead.

I actually think guest posting is a complete waste of time…for traffic generation. I have guest posted 3 times now n I haven’t seen any major spike in traffic. That said I think guest posting is a great way to increase brand awareness.

    Hi Lye,
I agree that sometimes it’s just not productive to guest post because of your own schedule or the amount of content that you are able to produce. I think that’s actually respectful of the other people’s blogs because you don’t want to post poor content for them and since your time doesn’t permit the same quality, you need to save it for your own blog.

      Hi Richard,

Great comments. You are right. It’s indeed disrespectful to submit a post with poor quality. Our reputation will be spoil if we do that. We don’t have to guest post if we don’t have time for our own blog.

      Thanks for the comments.

I like the idea of saving the best for your blog. Although you do want to get your name out there.

I don’t have a lot of experience with guest posting but I would think that without a plan especially guest posting might be a waste. Darn I need to work on my blogging “plan.”

I can’t say I agree with you Lye.
I mean, you make sense, but would you claim the same if you had no trouble whatsoever writing original, great quality content without breaking a sweat?
I don’t find it difficult, let alone time consuming, to write a good post – be that for my own blog or as a guest post. Moreover, Guest blogging is about more than generating incoming traffic, improving brand awareness – it’s about strengthening the blogosphere as a community and about improving your own writing skills. I’d be more than happy if you could get over to Joe’s blog and check out my guest post on this same subject – Give and You Shall Receive.

It’s great to hear a different voice. I understand your point. I do not doubt guest posting is good at generating traffic and increase brand awareness. What i want to get the point across is if somebody is like me, the focus should be on our own blog before we submit a guest post which the quality must be ensured.

Thanks for giving a different view on this topic. I appreciate that.

I certainly sympathize with your reluctance to put your best material on your own blog as opposed to someone else’s. That’s the main reason I haven’t gotten into guest blogging (although I might eventually).

Also, I have read on various blogs that while it’s still beneficial for traffic and SEO, the search engines are not rewarding it as much as in the past.

It is true that guest posting can increase traffic to your site but it also depends on a number of factors. The site you post on is very important because if you post on a small blog then the traffic will not make much of a difference. If you also decide to save the best for your own site then it is okay as you are making your blog better instead of improving others.
