How is your social networking skills? Bloggers are known to be poor in marketing and social networking according to some people. To attract huge traffic to your blog does not depend solely on publishing a post. You need to involve in promoting your site and networking with other bloggers.
Reasons For Poor Social Networking Skills
Social networking with other bloggers include visiting other blogger’s blog, commenting on other blogs, interaction with your readers in your blog and retweeting and promoting other blogger’s post. All these are required in building a community and maintaining a relationship.
There are bloggers who simply just don’t care about social networking. They simply think that just by publishing quality content, their blog will become a success. Quality blog content is only the foundation of a successful blog, however you need to spice it up with visitors and other bloggers. That’s when social networking comes in. Some of the reasons for poor social networking skills are:
- No Time: I used to use it as an excuse. But you see, it’s just an excuse. If you are serious in creating a community, you will find time to do some social networking activities no matter what.
- Not Sociable: You are shy in nature and you don’t like any social networking. You need to change your mindset if require your blog to grow. Just imagine how much traffic you will attract if you start interacting with other people.
- No Schedule: One day you are leaving comments at many blogs, the next day you disappear and there is no social networking from you. You need to have a schedule to do posting, networking etc.
- Blogging is just a Hobby: You treat blogging as a hobby, it’s just a channel where you can voice out your opinions and thoughts. It’s like a diary to you. You don’t care about social networking and traffic to your blog.
- Too Lazy: The other reason is you are simply too lazy. This is due to your attitude and your focus how you want your blog to be.
3 Simple Ways To Maintain Your Social Networking Activity
Blogging is my passion. I am not a full time blogger as i am holding a full time job. 2-3 hours is the time that i normally allocated to my blog everyday. Maximum is 4. Beside writing a post, i will spend the rest of my time visiting blogs, commenting and respond to comments within my blog. The time i have is not enough but i learnt how to manage the time properly to be consistently involve in social networking.
I use 3 simple ways to maintain my networking activities. If you are blogging in full time, the tips below may not be applicable but i hope you can find one which is helpful to you.
- Set a schedule
For those who regularly visit my blog, you should know my post frequency is around 2-3 days. It’s impossible for me to post daily as my time is mostly taken up by my work and family. Each day when it is the time to publish a post, i will spend most of my time writing. Social networking will be lesser.
When the day which i am not writing a post, i will spend the full 2-3 hours visiting blogs, commenting, login in Twitter and Facebook etc. I have a schedule set to do all this. By having a schedule, you will know how many blogs or bloggers you want to connect with especially if you can commit little time in blogging.
- Prioritize your blog visit
You may have noticed some bloggers can just be everywhere. You are able to find them commenting in every blogs you have visited. I don’t really expect you to do that if you are working or studying. What i normally do is to prioritize the blogs i need to visit and bloggers that i want to connect with.
My Google reader contains almost close to 40 blogs. I don’t comment in all of them though i do read every new post published. You can find me commenting and networking with bloggers who visited my blogs regularly. They are my priority if i am unable to connect with everyone in my readers lists. If you have the same situation like me, prioritize your visit and networking with those who you think close to.
- Connecting through email
For those blogs that you seldom leave comments or you have visitors from other niche, you can find some time to email a simple message to them. A simple message just to thank them for their support. It’s a good way to start a conversation and show them that you actually appreciate their visit and support. You will leave an impression if you directly email them. Though this does not apply to big blogs as they receive large amount of emails everyday. It can be a good way to promote return visitors too.
Conclusion
These are three simple ways that i use to maintain my networking with other bloggers due to my limited time allow for blogging. How many hours do you allocated to your blogs? Do you have any schedule on your social networking activities? If you have better ways, i would like to hear from you. Please kindly share it with us in the comment box.

Hi Lye
Awesome post, bro. And very well written, too. I don’t have a schedule just blog and comment at regularly. Though after reading this it makes sense to have a schedule and is something I may implement, especially since my work is coming up the ‘busy season.’ I couldn’t agree more with emailing your readers and thanking them and as you know this is something I have been advocating for sometime now.
Thanks for the great tips and advice.

Hi Michael,
I think it’s nothing wrong to blog and comment at regularly. I set a schedule because my blogging time is limited. If you are sure you are able to blog and comment as usual and always, it should be fine.
You are on the right track bro, it’s a good way to maintain relationship by sending email to your readers.

Hi Lye,
I like your tips and stick to them myself. I also used a number of the excuses which you mentioned but when I released them my readership increased.
I RT or FB share most of the posts I read. This instantly builds a relationship with fellow bloggers. Since I also comment on most blogs my relationship is further fortified. Sharing and commenting is a powerful form of time leveraging as other bloggers will tend to comment on and share you posts as well.
Thanks for sharing your insight and have a great day.

Hi Suhasini,
Thanks for finding the time to drop by and comments. I appreciate your support.
I like the idea of having a schedule for social media activitys, just like you i don’t have the time to write a blog post every day or comment on every blog i read.
But i set time aside to write qualitative blog posts or do qualitative comments in other blogs, cause i think a comment with a qualitative content is much more useful then a comment with a simple “Thanks”

You are right on about prioritizing Lye. When I first started I realized that I was all over the place…fun but not productive. I since then have been more strategic on how I utilize social networking (but I still have fun =)

Thanks for dropping by Michele.
Hi Lye
I think you do an awesome job with commenting and encouraging this newbie blogger and heaps of others too. To have a full-time job and still devote all that time to your blog and the blogging community you are a part of is commendable.
You write great posts like this one and still can be found on lots of other blogs supporting their efforts too.
Like you say; people can say they are too busy but what I have found is we find time to do the things we are passionate about.
