Whatever the niche, industry or market, every business must develop and maintain a strong relationship with its customers. Reaching out to customers has never been easier due to the Internet’s widespread availability. Your business can engage in online marketing and receive a “high return” in terms of online traffic and interest. One way to enhance your reputation and reach out to new customers is to create a company blog. Blogging is an effective marketing technique because of its relative ease, its low cost, and its potentially large reach.

This article discusses five reasons for your business to start a blog in order to generate exposure and potentially increase revenue.

1. Start a Blog to Built a Relationship with Existing Customers

Maintaining a good relationship with your existing customers is the key to ensuring a stable revenue stream. In addition, your existing customer base is the perfect “audience” for new products, services and even prices. Through your blog, develop a customer “chat room” that posts feedback about your business. Your customers will tell you what they want and do not want from you. Offer a customer loyalty program or create a customer “raffle” where your best clients can win great prizes. This will help encourage your customers to sing your company’s praises to their friends and families.

2. Start a Blog to Attract New Customers

A blog is an excellent marketing tool to reach a new audience. Through your loyalty program, offer an incentive if your customers attract new traffic to your blog. Give coupons if new people “sign up” for your newsletter. Allow your customers to spread your marketing messages virally and above all, have your customer base and your blog do all the work for you.
3. Start a Blog to Get Customers from Other Blogs

Attract additional customers, and therefore potential growth, by using your blog as your “spokes person” on various industry websites, online platforms, forums and chat rooms. You can use well established and powerful blogs to bring new traffic to yourself. Write comments and advertise on these blogs in order to get people to visit your blog. The end result will be increased exposure, more customers, and therefore more revenue.

4. Start a Blog to Diversify Within Your Niche Market

Whatever the nature of your business, you can leverage your blog to diversify. For example, if you are in the restaurant business, you can use your blog to promote cooking courses in the form of eBooks or DVDs.

5. Start a Blog to Get Customer Feedback

Use your blog to introduce new company services and products in order to see how they do. Introducing a new product line always comes with a risk. For this reason, make use of your customers’ opinions! Offer a “special pre-sale” to existing customers and have them try out your new products. You can ask their opinions and reactions in your blog and see if your new products will succeed. Build upon your loyal client base by using their feedback to make your products and services more attractive. Take note of their buying habits, their likes and dislikes, and tailor your goods to fit their needs.

    Hi Alex
I started my blog to write about one of my passions. But the end game was always to eventually monetize it and make an income from it. That should be happening soon. Building community has been an important factor in this too. Probably why I enjoy blogging rather than just marketing. Thanks for your thoughts.

    Hi Alex Papa!
Pardon me for being the first time to read your blog post at Lye’s blog. You have written it very well indeed. I can say that in this internet rampant era, people go online for information more than before. And seriously, a blog is definitely a way to go to build a presence online :)

As businesses have their offline stores along the busy streets, they should also have their online real estate, aka their blog. They will be leaving a lot of money on the table, if they don’t have a blog today. So great post Alex!

    Hi Alex,

I would like to add one more reason why a business should have a blog. Search engines favor sites that have regular fresh content added to them. Blog posts satisfy search engine’s hunger for updated, new content. Without a blog, most websites would be static. This would probably affect their rankings and traffic.
