6 Most Important Things Every New Blogger Should Know

Blogging

I started Findmyblogway in July and time really flies. Soon 2010 will be over and we will be looking forward to a brand new year. It is almost four months since my first post in Findmyblogway is up in July. It is a smooth and pleasant journey for me so far. Even though the timeframe is short but it is enough for me to learn a few lessons in blogging. If you are just starting out in blogging, these are the 6 most important things you should know.

1. Decide your theme beforehand

To get your hands on writing a post, you need a domain name and web host. Well I won’t want to cover that much as this is the most basic requirements when you start a blog. The next important thing is a theme. You have to decide for yourself whether you are going for a free theme or a premium theme. It’s important before your blog is alive as you wouldn’t want to spend your time tweaking with the appearance in the initial stage. The early stages of blogging should see you concentrating on writing good content. You should not spend too much time on improving the design.

Keep your design simple and visually appealing, try not to add too much fanciful stuff on it and you should be fine.

2. Blog commenting is a good way to kick off your traffic

Blog commenting is the best way to attract your first visitor to your site. Find a number of similar blogs related to your niche and start commenting on their site. I don’t really agree you should spend your time and comment in every blog that you can find. The main purpose of blog commenting is to attract traffic but I encourage you to pick a few blogs that you like, be it their design, content or the blogger personality, make sure you comment on these blogs regularly and connect with the blogger.

You are trying to build a community here. Make yourself as helpful as you can. Follow them in Twitter, friend them in Facebook and subscribe to their newsletter and feeds. Establish a good relationship is going to help you in long term.

3. Statistics is going to hinder your progress

I fully understand checking your traffic stats are going to excite you when you just started blogging. But that is not necessary. Your traffic is pathetic in the initial stages, what’s the point of checking it every day or even every hour.  Your eyes will be blind and the low numbers is going to dampen your morale lower. Your passion will die and you will be discouraged in continuing your passion.

If you can’t help to keep on checking your traffic, remember to take it easy when the number is not satisfactorily. Just focus on providing the content that your visitors want and traffic will come naturally.

4. Don’t burn yourself out

You should not be having the symptoms of burning out from blogging. Unless you are blogging full time, else you should not have a pressure to deliver. It’s important to update your blog consistently but you don’t have to force yourself to write a post just because you have to. Why torture yourself? Blogging should be fun and enjoyable. I have been reminding myself since day 1 I started blogging.

Why are people getting burn out? The reason is they focus too much on financial gains. You search for information on making money every day and this is going to cause a headache to you as there is tons of information in the search engine. You should stop doing that as this will cause you to lose your focus. It can be a motivation factor to you but it can pull you down too.

5. Don’t absorb too much information

Everyone have their own opinion on a particular subject or topic. There is lots of information circulating in the internet. Just imagine I tell you “Content is King” but another blogger will tell you it is not. Use your judgement wisely. Follow what your heart tells you to do. Whatever advice you listen from the blogosphere, don’t do all at the same time. Just follow the one you resonate most and test it out. If it doesn’t work, turn to the other advice.

I would advise you to stop searching for a foolproof solution. You just have to decide what works and put all your hearts to make it work.

6. Enjoy your blogging journey

Whether you are blogging for financial benefits or purely for passion, enjoy your blogging journey as long as you can. Your passion can be maintained and you can even prevent yourself from getting a burn out from blogging. Don’t focus on the negative elements such as low traffic, low visitors or even low income. Think on the positive side; you are able to provide value to others and people will thank you for that.

    Hi Lye,

I agree with each one of your tips.

#6 is where it all starts. If you can enjoy the journey it’s easier to follow your advice. Ups and downs are inevitable but learning to smile throughout the process makes the downs more bearable and causes you to focus on the positives throughout the process.

    Thanks for sharing your insight!

      Hi Ryan,

It seems a lot of people fail because they miss out #6 point which is the most important. If they learn how to enjoy and think positively probably the chances of success will be bigger.

      Thanks for commenting.

    Hi Lye,

I think most of the things new bloggers should know, have already been stated by you here :)

I want to share that Consistency is really important in blogging, especially for a new blog. And I would usually suggest kick-start the blogging momentum by blogging 1 post/day for 7-14 days. If they can blog for 30days straight, that would even be better!

Lye, I think you had done a really good job in posting content almost every other day, and I think new bloggers should learn to be consistent like you :)

    Enjoy weekend!

      Hi Ding,

I tried to be as consistent as possible as this is the posting frequency that i have set for myself. I believe every blogger should adjust their posting frequency according to their availability.

Thanks for visiting and the support.

    Hi Lye –

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the subject. I started my blog in late August so I can definitely relate.

I agree with your thoughts more or less. I think that if you truly want to enjoy success blogging one of the most important undertakings should be to determine your market niche, i.e. what are you going to be blogging about.

In my opinion you definitely have to have a plan and know more or less what value it is that you are going to be providing to your readers.

I don’t think I necessarily agree that the main purpose of commenting on other blogs is to drive traffic to your blog. I see commenting on blogs more of a way to have a discussion, build relationships and share ideas because we all come from different backgrounds and by nature may have different perspectives on the same topic.

Other than those to main points I am pretty much on board with your ideas. I look forward to more of your content.

    All the best my friend!

      Hi Hector,

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment on this post. Determine on a niche depend on the goals you have out of blogging. Whether is it out of passion or out of financial gains.

I agree blog commenting is a good way to have the benefits that you mentioned. My main point is if you want the first visitor, blog commenting is a good way to get start.

Thanks for visiting and the comments.
