For those who are familiar with me and have been following me all these while should know I hold a full time job as a sales engineer. I had a sales meeting today. The topic is “How to improve your sales”. Once at a time we need to schedule a meeting in order to reflect the strategy and ways to improve the sales revenue for the company. We discussed quite a number of things today. I think it’s good that I share with you what I have learnt out of the meeting.
What Does My Sales Meeting Got to Do With Blogging
Sure it does. In fact, “sales” is taking place in the world anywhere, anytime and any jobs you can come across. We are also selling in the blogosphere. What are we selling?
- Selling yourself
If you start a blog, first you need to sell yourself to the visitors who arrive in your blog. Selling yourself successfully will create trust from your visitors. You need to sell your content and blog design that appeals to the visitors. Whenever you publish a post, you are doing selling. You need to promote your post and interact with your readers. That’s doing sales.
- Selling affiliated products
If your blog has gain decent traffic, you have plans to monetize your blog. One of the best ways to do it is promoting affiliate products in your blog. Clickbank and Commission Junction are two of the popular affiliate programs you can sign up and find suitable products to sell.
- Selling your own products
As you gain enough knowledge, you probably thinking of selling your own product which you have spend a lot of time and effort in. Ebooks, courses, services and consulting are some that you can think of.
Do you think it is easy to make a sale online? If you think it’s going to be easy, you are terribly wrong. You need to master the “art of selling” before you are able to sell yourself and any products that you have. A few things you need to know before you actually getting your hands tie up and get nothing in return. This despite you putting your efforts in and think you did everything right. Sad to say, you got it wrong.
6 Rules You Need to Know to Master The Art of Selling
1. Understand the needs and demand
If you need to sell something, you need to understand whether there is a demand. Understand the need and demand is extremely important if you want to earn an income online. You wouldn’t want to sell a pen to a 2 year old kid and expect their mom to buy for their child. You are lucky if you are not being chase away.
2. Research and study your market
How can you understand the need and demand for the product you are going to sell? You need to do some research and study your targeted market. Go to the forums and see what people are looking for. Check the keywords related to your niche and see what people are searching the most. You can also do a survey and find out what problems your readers are facing. If you can provide the solution, I believe you can sell to a minimum of 5 people out of 10 who visit your blog.
3. Understand yourself and products well
If you know yourself and your products well, there is every chance people will feel more confident to buy from you. If you only know web design basics, do you think you feel confident in designing other people’s website? Definitely not, people don’t have the confidence in you too. Once you lost your trust, you will have a hard time gaining it back. If you are promoting some affiliated products that you never use, do you think you can write a good review to attract any buyers? Hell no, how can you promote a product which you have no understanding how it works and why it works? It simply doesn’t work to your favor if you don’t understand the products at your finger tips.
4. Decide on the price
You cannot deny the fact that price plays an important part in selling. I don’t have the habit of comparing prices when I buy something but I know some of you may do. If you want to sell your product or services, you need to set a correct pricing to justify it. Setting your pricing too high may turn people off while setting a low pricing have a negative effect too. Cheap and good things don’t really come together. If you can make it cheap and good at the same time, it’s good for you. You will be dominating the whole world.
5. Do some heavy promotion
Once your product is released and everything is set and ready to go, it’s not the end of your job. You need to promote heavily in whatever media you can think of. Twitter, facebook, your blog and word of mouths from other bloggers all play a part in letting more people know about it. You can’t simply wait down there and start collecting money. People won’t know you have a solution that can solve their problems.
6. Good service and support
Your products are selling like hot cakes. Don’t be too happy yet. This is just the beginning. People will face problems in using your products. They depend on you to answer to their queries and problems. If you never take good care of after sales service and support, I can guarantee you are making your last sales online. To provide good after sales service and support will build up a great rapport with your customers and I am sure they will come back for more for your next product or service.
Conclusion
If you can master these 6 rules in art of selling, I don’t think you will go too far on the wrong track. Follow these 6 rules closely if you intend on selling yourself or products to make some sales and fulfill your goal of living a comfortable internet lifestyle. Here is to your blogging success.

Hi Lye
You are spot here bro. As bloggers we our selling ourselves every single day. We have to build trust in people for them to buy us and our products. And we should only promote other products that we use ourselves. This is why I get so annoyed at dodgy IMs who send me emails full of affiliate links. I work in sales too and I agree that the 6 steps you have listed are essential to successful selling. One thing I would add is “people don’t like to be sold to, but they love to buy.”
Thanks for this kick ass post Lye.

Hi Michael,
The IM email you received definitely is wrong strategy of selling. They did not make an effort to understand the needs and demands.
Thanks for this added point bro. Absolutely awesome.

Hi Lye,
You hit on all key pointers here. Mention of the after-sale is important. Once the money is in your pocket you need to provide ongoing support or else you will be killed via word of mouth. This is how Dell ran into trouble a while back.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Ryan,
That’s really the most important part. To make a few sales is the beginning to make it even bigger, so after-sale service and support should be a must.

Great Post Lye,
I think the art of selling is a part of life. When you interacct with people, in general you are selling them an idea. When it’s to go out to a particular restaraunt for lunch or asking them to purchase something from you, you are selling something. The key is learning how to make that emotional connection to the other person so they feel like you are giving them something that meets their needs.

Hi Richard,
The last point is spot on. That’s the reason why we need to provide value and create trust between our visitors and us. They will only buy through or from somebody they trust.
Thanks for the great comment.

All good points Lye. There doesn’t seem to be one more important than the other as they are all key elements to selling.
Especially noteworthy is creating a product your target market WANTS to buy. Many people get caught up in creating something they think others want without having done the research.
This is were polls come in handy. =)
Thanks for the share!

Great points!
At it’s heart everything you do in blogging is about sales. You may be doing your damnedest to help, educate and assist people but along the way you are also building people’s faith in you.
When you do this you are “selling” yourself and your “knowledge” which can be capitalized on later.
I would much rather have someones faith than make any single sale. If you are known only for quality you get to make sales again and again!
Thanks for a great piece! Have an awesome weekend!!!
