Are you an affiliate marketer or aspiring to be one, then you need to get glued on this post. This is my 3rd year marketing various affiliate offers, I have discovered 5 pitfalls that can limit you from making the kind of money you desire. Affiliate marketing is a very interesting business to be in. If you ask me, I prefer earning money from affiliate because of the flexibility, you virtually have the chance to promote any type of product without beating your fist on product creation.

Without much ado, here are the 5 affiliate marketing pitfalls and how to avoid them.

1. No Basic Knowledge

While starting out on my internet marketing career, I read a lot of e-books that taught me how to start building an empire, without even knowing what the empire is all about. The internet is filled with thousands of products and more is yet to come. In fact, when you don’t have the basic knowledge about the subject in question, you tend to apply an advanced marketing technique to every facet of your business. In order to sell any product effectively, you need the right mindset, a cute foundational course and if need be, mistakes that you can learn from.

Get to know how marketing is supposed to be carried out. There is no difference between marketing online and offline, you still have people to deal with, you need a bank account and all those stuffs. Acquiring the basic knowledge first is priceless.

2. No Basic Skill

Spend time with your business. Don’t assume you have known it all, a great skill you should master in order to see huge success as an affiliate, is copy writing.

You can make money with this system, even without a skill, that is the most enticing word used by internet marketers to lure beginners and even intermediates into buying their latest e-book. Well, this is not true, although making money online with affiliate marketing is not rocket science, but it’s not for the unlearned. You need to understand how the basic tools are used, what about writing articles, getting acquainted with basic search engine optimization? All these are some skills you should be friendly with before promoting any affiliate product.

3. Not Building An Email List First

The money is in the list – that’s our internet marketing slogan and guess what? That’s the absolute truth. Or better still, let me paraphrase that, the money is in the relationship you have with your list. If you don’t build a responsive email list, you will end up regretting at the end of the day. The only people who make 5 figures and above do so because they have a huge list they promote offers to every week at least.

Your internet success is directly proportal to the number of people you’re able to reach with the click of the button, and this can only be made possible when you have a responsive list. No matter your level in this internet marketing industry, you need to start building a list from the very first day. Getting targeted traffic is expensive, it would either cost your precious time or money and the only way to make this profitable is to invest that traffic, buy employing a lead capture system.

4. Chasing After Worthless Traffic

We all know how the right traffic can make a huge difference in your online business, but you need to get focused. And because of the importance of web traffic, affiliate marketers are seriously chasing after the next in “thing” in traffic generation, we are all searching for that loophole that would send an avalanche of targeted visitors to us. What you fail to understand is that not all traffic good – in fact, it’s better to attract few targeted traffic than thousands of people who are not ready to buy your affiliate recommendations.

What are some of the worthless traffic sources? I’m surprised, you should have known about these earlier. Don’t waste your precious time on traffic exchanges with the hope that you will convert the huge members to your site. Concentrate on effective article marketing, guest posting, JV networking and active forum participation. These can send you the right traffic that takes action ultimately.

5. Social Media Hookup

Do you spend all your time on facebook, twitter or just name it social site? Do you think they are worth it? Now don’t get me wrong, with the right approach, anyone can get traffic from these sites. But the irony of these traffic sources is that 70% of the people in these sites are not business inclined. They simply want to meet new friends and share their favorite sites. I observed recently that my opt in grew in thousands when I promoted my offer via facebook but, only a few of these people actually bought my product when I followed up.

Instead of spending all your time adding, following and networking with others right here, invest that time guest posting on popular blog and the traffic you attract is going to be interested in whatever you offer. The reason why this approach is fabulous is because, blog readers are already pre-sold, they are simply waiting for the next post to arrive. Some of these top blogs also have good page rank on Google and this can boost your search engine performance and ultimately deliver long term traffic.

If you enjoyed this post, why not say something or make your contributions. We are all learning and no one has arrived yet, not even the best blogger ever.

That is right! If you do not know all the basics, how can you learn the complicated ones? This is a good review so that those who are planning to enter in this kind of field will already know what to do.

Hey Michael: It’s nice to see you around the community! Nice job on the article you hit some good points. The best one was probably no basic knowledge. Basic knowledge before taking on any task is priceless. I recently got a new car and my dad keep urging me to read the instruction booklet in case the car breaks down. It would best to be prepared for a situation then unprepared.

I like what you said about social media also! I have also talked about how social media might not be right for everyone, and not spending too much time on there. You could be using that time to do something else more productive.

    Thanks for the awesome article.

One thing about affiliate marketing is that once there is no focus, no skill, you achieve nothing and might turn down. It is a broad field that you have to decide on products or servcises.

The first two things that you’ve mentioned (no basic knowledge and basic skills) are the most common to those who are about to get started with affiliate marketing. I also see that blog owners claimed that they don’t make money because there’s no opt-in form or Pop-Up Domination present within their blog to build a list. This article would help them a lot to avoid these pitfalls.

    Cheers!
