To start a blog need several steps to get it done. First you got to pick a niche that you are passionate about, secondly you need to get a domain name. Then you need to find a web host, install your blogging platform and choose a theme if you are using WordPress and there you go. Your blog is up and running. Your next task is to publish lots of content and involved in marketing and promoting of your blog hoping that you can attract a lot of traffic and gain some fame and even money at the end.
It sounds simple huh! But no that doesn’t look so simple at all. To create a blog is easy, as long as you know how to write. You can start a blog. What i want to tell you is my friends, to maintain a blog for long term is not easy at all. The main criteria of having a huge traffic is to have solid content as you probably know “Content is King”. It really is, i believe so. If you are publishing great content day in day out, even if you are a poor marketer of your blog(That doesn’t mean you don’t do anything at all) your blog traffic will grow gradually. Be it using social media or commenting in others blog, you need to start somewhere. If you are poor in that, words of mouth from fellow bloggers can help you in your traffic though do not expect it be in miracle numbers provided your content is of the highest quality.
However if your blog is not getting any traffic, have you ever wonder what had gone wrong? Is it because you are not promoting enough or you are simply a poor blogger? You try to blame here, blame there, blaming yourself and blaming about bad luck. However did you ever try to analysis what has gone wrong with your blog? Did you try to figure out whether you are making any mistakes somewhere and is there any improvements that you can make? Did you try to analyse your blog?
Google Analytics is one popular traffic checker that is being used by numerous bloggers. Most of the bloggers make use of it to track the traffic and visitors. If you are only in to check how many visitors you have, i think this is the time that you should observe more with Google Analytics. Lets take a look at the site usage of FindMyblogWay.com
From the picture above, you can see some data with your blog traffic. There is number of visits, pageviews, pages/visits, bounce rate, average time that your visitors stay and percentage of new visits. i am actually not so particular about the visits and pageviews. I am more concerned with the the bounce rate and how long my visitors stay in my blog. As you can see, i have a bounce rate of 48.38% and the average time that my visitors spend is 7 mins plus. Not too good but not that bad either.
Bounce rate is a term used in web site traffic analysis. It essentially represents the percentage of initial visitors to a site who “bounce” away to a different site, rather than continue on to other pages within the same site. (Source from Wikipedia) If the bounce rate has a higher percentage that means the faster that your visitors “bounce” away from your site. There could be a few reasons behind this:
- poor blog design
- poor navigation
- poor content
- too many flashy ads
Do take note the bounce rate could come from different source of visitors. It can be your loyal readers who subscribe to your feeds and always follow your archives. Search Engine visitors may land on your site as he is looking for information and he is directed to your site by search engines. High possibility that he will leave after getting what he wants. The other source may come from referrals who i think is most likely to “bounce” away from your site. Regardless of the reason, by looking at the bounce rate gives you an idea of how fast your visitors are leaving your site. You can’t possibly understand the reason behind a high bounce rate, but the reasons stated above maybe one of them. In overall, no matter where the source of your visitors come from, you need to create easy navigation and emphasize your content link in your blog to make it easily visible to your visitors to reduce the bounce rate.
The next important stats that i always take note is the content that attract the most pageviews. What type of content attract the most attention from the visitors? From the picture, you can see that my most popular post is posted in 15th August 10 factors to aim for if you want your blog to be successful. Of course you wouldn’t want to produce every posts in a similar way but it will give you some guide at what your visitors are looking for. The blog is written by you for sure but your post is meant for the readers. If your visitors like informational posts, then you should roll in more informational posts for your readers. Your visitors is the reason that make your blogging venture a success. Target what your audience want is a key element for a low “Bounce rate”.
There are several stats that you can explore from Google Analytics. My recommendation is that do not just focus on the number of visitors that you have. The numbers of visitors well is just a number. You can have one thousand of visitors but imagine that you have a bounce rate of 80%-100% and the average time that they spend is less than one minute. Do you think you will have a successful blog? The ideal bounce rate will be somewhere 20-35% and anything above 35% will be a concern for you. If you have a bounce rate of 50%, then you should be worry about it and try to find out the reason behind. You can always do a poll in your blog to check with your visitors regarding your design, content or anything related to it which you suspect is the reason behind the poor performance of your blog. Do not wait for that to happen, analyse your blog now. You will have a clearer picture with your blog if you do that.

Really great post Lye,
You will be a top blogger one day – I am very sure about that!
I keep on wondering how you are able to create great posts like this – Do you have any marketing/blogging experience before this?
You are absolutely right about writing great content. Writing great content is very important but it is of no use if there is no one to read it!
