Are We Another Average Blogger in The Making?

Average Blogger

This is an interesting post. The above title “We” includes me. You heard that loud and clear. That’s what I call myself. I am an average blogger. Let me explain why. I developed this mindset after seeing what other bloggers are doing with their blog. Any blogger who blogs, no matter how unwilling are they, “Content is King” is the ultimate reason for a high traffic blog.

Every blogs need high quality content. No doubt about that. How do you actually define high quality content? First I want to bring to your knowledge regarding three bloggers whom I respect and admire. They are the ones who made me realize that I am just another average blogger. I am sure most of you have visited their blogs and following them on social media.

In case you have not done so, you really should subscribe to their blog. They produce quality content with lots of information. Who are they?

Steve Scott from Stevescottsite.com

I can’t remember how I came across Steve’s site but I am glad I found him. Steve is a blogger who is making six figures and recently spent seven months travelling Europe. He is full of experience in internet marketing and has lots of plan under his sleeve at the moment. His posting is regular and what I really like about him is he is able to maintain quality under such busy posting schedule.

Some post examples:

Tristan Higbee from BloggingBookshelf.com

I know Tristan from a guest post he did in Kikolani.com and I have been a loyal reader of his blog since. Tristan has been blogging for seven years and he is a full time blogger. He is a creative and talented blogger whom I think he put it to good use. Take a look at his post and about page. You will find interesting infographics everywhere and that really interest people in how he does it. I believe Tristan is one blogger you should look out for in 2011 as he is doing everything right. Actively guest post in other blogs, writing ebook of his own and produce quality contents every week. Probably that’s because he has a gun pointing at his head :)

Some post examples:

The Single Most Important Elements of a Successful Blog

Blogging With a Gun to Your Head(or How to REALLY Get Things Done)

Blog Tyrant from Blogtyrant.com

If you have been reading Problogger, then you should be familiar with Blog Tyrant as he wrote a few guest posts for Problogger. I landed on his site not because of that through. I first head of Blog Tyrant through my blog friend Michael‘s blog.  Blog Tyrant was one of the blogs he predicted to achieve big things in 2011. His posting schedule is not frequent but once he put up a new post, you got to stand up and look up.

Some post examples:

How to Blog Part 1: The 7,089 Word Series You’ll Need to Bookmark

Blue Shirt Trust: How to Increase Conversion in Everything

I need to mention that the posts are some examples of their quality contents. These are not their most popular posts yet. Just imagine the importance of quality content they demand of themselves. I don’t see this as a comparison to them rather than they are a benchmark for us. This is what a blogger must produce in order to succeed.

Why are Their Posts Popular

There are some traits that you can see in their post which proves so popular:

Their post is long – Look at their post. Seldom did I see them publish a post with few hundred words. I don’t know what is the average words they write in each posts but I believe it’s at least 1500 words and above. Short post doesn’t mean bad post. However, you are able to stuff more information in a longer post and provide the information people want to read.

Creative headlines – They take extra effort to craft a sticky headline which prompts you to click and continue reading.

Rich in information – They have rich and deep information which can catch your attention. It gave you a “wow” factor and you have the urge to leave your comments and say thanks for such an awesome post.

You want to return back for more – This is one scenario we like to see as a blogger. If you can attract return visitors, it means people like reading your post and it’s much easier to convince them if you have a product to sell.

Worth bookmarking – The post is packed with information and call to action, you will find it is worth bookmarking for future reference.

We shouldn’t underestimate the requirements of promotion and marketing but great content is the foundation we require. With a solid foundation behind us, it’s much easier to convert extra traffic into loyal readers or subscribers.

Questions You Need to Ask Yourself

I don’t include the basics such as it should be helpful or unique because all bloggers want their post to be helpful. If you are writing in your own voice, that’s unique. But somehow, some will become great bloggers, some are good while other remained average. I believe my post is helpful too. But it doesn’t seem capable of creating a buzz. This will narrow down to few questions.

Do I have the talent?

Am I creative enough?

Do I have the copywriting skills?

Am I trying my best?

If the answer is uncertain for each questions, not surprising to find I am just another average blogger blogging online. You don’t need people to tell you that. By looking at your own traffic stats and your own blog content, you will know it. If 30 people reading your blog, you get 3-4 retweets, something is wrong.

In case you are wondering, this post is not written to run me down. I am not discouraged by the fact I am an average blogger (for now). In fact I fully enjoy myself in the blogosphere. I will continue to publish my post over here in Findmyblogway, enjoying the company of the awesome blogging community. My regular visitors and my blogging friends, your company is much appreciated.

My purpose for writing this post is more on self-reflection, not only on me but on whoever is reading. There are mainly two purposes for people to blog. It’s either for passion or for money. I tend to stay more to the first as blogging is my passion. As long as people want to read my blog, I will stay here for good. If you blog because of money or simply idolize the internet lifestyle, here’s what I have to say.

Give yourself some timeline – Blogging is not a get rich quick scheme but you need to set a timeline for your online business. Somehow if you can’t attract traffic or achieve anything within your timeline, you need to channel your focus and energy elsewhere.

Harsh truth of reality – You need to accept you are just one of those bloggers who fall into the category of failure if everything does not act according to plan. Ditch the thoughts of living an internet lifestyle and go look for a job.

Learn to let go – You just need to learn to let go. You are not cut out to live an internet lifestyle. You tried and did your best. But the results won’t come.

This Post is Not to Discourage You

I certainly hope you are not my discouraged by this post. My main idea is to let you know you are facing fierce competition in the blogosphere and you need to prepare for that. It’s not easy to earn money from blogging. If you can’t shake off the “Average Blogger” tag and start producing great content that people like, they would rather go to somebody else who can produce what they want.

Take some time of yours and ponder about this. See where you are going and then decide what’s your next step. For me, i will just be blogging happily as usual. Meanwhile please leave a comment to share your thoughts with us.

    Hi Lye

One of the first things you mention I totally agree with. Learn from those who are doing it. I love Tristan’s posts and have actually mentioned him in my new post I published about 5 minutes ago! He is being recognised by many of us.

Yes he writes long posts. However, they are quality and quantity and I look forward to each time he publishes. Know there will be heaps for me to learn. He is a genuine nice guy too who respects his readers and wants to see all of us succeed. He is very generous with sharing his already vasts amounts of knowledge.

It’s great when we can all share what we are learning and any new blogs we have discovered. I met a fellow Aussie today who has only just met Rick LaPoint and Alex Whalley but already enjoying their posts. I happened to mention them when I was commenting on his blog and others saw it and were over checking out Rick’s latest post.

Building a community that definitely is going to elevate us from average to amazing :-) Sharing and caring while we work hard to get to that position of being successful marketers.

There are lots of amazing bloggers from Australia and i am really glad to meet you, Michael, Alex and the rest of the guys. It’s an awesome community by you guys and i am not surprise that others found Rick and Alex through your comments. You have been a wonderful friend to lots of blogger. Lye, this was a really great post! Thanks for the great mention and the wonderful links!

I really like this: “My main idea is to let you know you are facing fierce competition in the blogosphere and you need to prepare for that.”

It’s so true! The days are gone when you could just toss up a blog, throw up some AdSense and rake in thousands of dollars a month in passive income. It just doesn’t work like that. You’ve got to work LONG and HARD!

The only way to beat competition is to be better than your competition. It’s really simple… if you’re not better than them, you won’t beat them!

Steve Scott has a great site. He consistently provides awesome content. I’ve been to the Blog Tyrant a few times, but need to go back and check it out again.

Again, thanks for an awesome post, Lye! I think this is one of your best posts, and not only because you mentioned me in it :)

      Hi Tristan,

You are welcome and you fully deserved the mention. I have been impressed by your work. Your desire to succeed can be shown in your blog.

There are too many bloggers blogging about the same thing and we really need to know ourselves. We don’t have to give up but we must understand we fare poorer than others if we fail.

Thanks for the kind words. Appreciated your support.

Really interesting post. I have come across number of bloggers who work very hard but still they don’t get even good success. There are number of factors other than hard work. Its your skills and your way of working which matters.
You need to know what it takes to make a blog successful. Even the high quality and unique contents alone can’t make your blog get readers and traffic. You need to look at SEO part also.

      Hi Pritam,

I agree. It’s our skills, knowledge of the niche and our working method that determines how far we go. Anything less, we are just another average blogger.

      Thanks for the comments.

Oh i love Steve’s blog, he write pretty straightforward and trustworthy, he does not hide anything, so is Tristan.

Tristan is a nice blogger, he is very friendly one apart of having a good blog articles.

Haven’t checked Blog Tyrant, will do it later after lunch LOL.

I don’t agree too much with #the post is too long.

Actually i had a lot of posts which are very short but my readers find them useful because they are to the point.

In my blog’s niche, people find my video tutorials are more helpful than screenshot steps even.

All three are awesome bloggers. You won’t regret visiting Tyrant’s blog.

Short posts are definitely good posts too. I am just wondering if their posts are short, will it make any difference?

Thanks for dropping by and sharing your opinion. Much appreciated.

    Awesome post Lye,
Those guys are awesome :D . Well, I don’t think the length of a post matters. You just pass the information you want to pass across to your readers through your own unique voice. And leave the rest.

“Be Yourself” is one of the main key that can make you stand out from the rest. That’s just the fact. Thanks a lot for sharing. Have fun.

      Hi Samuel,

Yes, the length doesn’t matter as long as you are writing in your own voice. But longer post with more information will be more appealing to your visitors and readers. Don’t you think?

Thanks for dropping by. Talk soon.

Steve rocks and Tristan as well. In fact, I haven’t heard of the Blog Tyrant yet, a new blogger. Yay! This article in and of itself was remarkable. You’ve mentioned folks but the thing that stood out for me was your voice. It was honest, truthful and straight to the point.

I kind of couldn’t handle the reality of ‘not making it’ online. In fact, if that does become a reality. I’ll have to thank you for opening my eyes. It’s also something I have thought about when I writing my e-course.

The ability to let go is really a hard urge to break, but when you can, moving on just helps you grow as a person more. You really will understand what you’re capable of.

Thanks again for the awesome read.

    You’re rocking it Lye, ;)

I believe you have assembled a pretty awesome community and you have a number of plans going on. We just have to be patient don’t we? We won’t know how long we going to make it but it’s something we enjoy doing so we will just keep on doing.

    Hi Lye,

the main problem is that most of the bloggers (including me) are trying to follow some blogging patterns they learned from somewhere and trying to learn how to stick with them without enriching something extra.

Content is King how many time did we hear it? Everyone in blogosphere has heard it but how many people really think about it? How many people trying really to be different, and the most important question how many people are really naturely different from the crowd?
This is not something you can learn, this is something you have to born with.

That’s why Tristan’s blog is one of my favorite, this guy just do things differently and he is a natural blogger.

    Thanks for this!

      Hi Adam,

Thanks for pointing it out. We just need to be different to stand out from the crowd. It’s just not that easy. Almost every blogging pattern is covered and it depends on our skills and knowledge to do something different.

      Thanks again for the comments.

Lye – I love Tristan over at the blogging bookshelf, and I really didn’t realize why his posts were so popular until I read your traits. And the common trait I see in most of his posts is that they are long and not filled with a lot of fluff, but with a lot of rich information.

There is definitely a lot of fierce competition in the blogging world, but as long as you keep giving your readers great content you should do well.

The most important thing is Tristan packed so much information in his post and he made use of infographics to illustrate his ideas. Cool.

Yes, you are right. We just have to continue provide value for our readers and we should see some success.

      Thanks for your comments.

I subscribe to all three of the bloggers that you mention. In fact, I’ve already spotlighted Blog Tyrant in a previous post.

I also find Tristan to be a prolific writer. His posts are packed with information and he does a really good job of getting his points across with his infographics.

The key for all of these bloggers is really great content. But in particular they have a really good number of “pillar” articles. These types of articles are very sticky.

After you get to hear of great bloggers like the ones you have mentioned above who earn so much from their blogs you realize that there is still a long way to go. It is good to listen to their stories and to try and borrow ideas form them so that even if you do not reach their levels of success you will still be happy with your income.
