Blogging creates a lot of fun. It’s such a fun that it makes people addicted to it. Well at least i am. So what’s it in blogging that people are obsessed about? It’s about sharing your passion, building a community and creating a comfortable internet lifestyle.
Just by looking at the A-list bloggers in the blogosphere, there is a lot of envy by people looking at how much they achieved. We all know it doesn’t come easy. There are a lot of reasons that people may come up with for them to become an authority or expert in their niche. These are some of the traits that people may think of:
- They are hardworking
- They are prolific writers
- They are proactive learners
- They are ambitious
- They are good in networking.
Is that what it takes for them to become A-list bloggers? Yes probably but i believe the most important reason is the headline that i wrote above. They are willing to give more than they receive. It may sounds simple but that’s the most important element you need to have in you when you decided to start a blog. People are talking about reciprocation, to give and take will foster relationship. True, but it require two-way mutual action by both parties.
Are You Willing to Give More Than You Receive?
We need to start giving once we decided to set up a blog. We are giving gradually as our blog grows. So what are the things that we need to give?
1. Money
This doesn’t mean that you are giving out money but rather investment that you need to give. If you wish to blog on a self-hosted platform, you need to spend on domain name, web host or even a premium theme if you want a unique design. On and off you may want to purchase a course or ebook to widen your knowledge, you need to give more. If you are thinking about receiving before you make any investment, high chance is that you will use everything that goes free.
Should you wish to become an affiliate of a certain product, you need to purchase the product and actually use it before you write a good review on it. If you do not spend on the product, most likely you will not write a good review on it and will not earn any affiliate earnings out of it.
2. Time
Lets face it. Blogging needs a lot of time commitment. Unless you are blogging on a full time basis, blogging will affect your social and family life. Not only you need to create content on a consistent basis but you also need to read other blogs and social networking with other bloggers. There is certainly a heavy load of time involved if you are into blogging.
These A-List bloggers gives a lot of time away when they decided blogging is the route they want to take. It doesn’t apply to the time that they spend to grow their blog, it also includes the time they waited to see the results. If they are not willing to give their time initially, it’s impossible for them to receive the success they craved.
3. Support
Providing support to other bloggers is very common nowadays. This includes promote each other’s blogs, products, providing comments, retweet the posts etc. Do you always expect to receive the same kind of support that you always give? Please do not cultivate that kind of mentality which will stop you providing the support to other bloggers. If you make 10 comments in 10 blogs, do not expect those 10 bloggers visiting your blog to return the comments too. Do a retweet or post a comment if you receive value from the post or you really profit from it. It’s not healthy for you to think that people has a duty to return the favor just because you do it in their blog.
People will actually appreciate from the fact that you are their loyal supporter. Focus on building your blog with quality content and soon your efforts and hardwork will be noted and appreciated.
How Can You Give More Without Thinking You Need to Receive?
It’s normal for people to expect something in return when you start giving. There is nothing wrong with that. But this will hinder the progress of your blog if you keep thinking that way. There are few ways that can help you to stop thinking that way:
- Always think positively instead of negatively
People did not return the favor probably they are extremely busy, they have nothing valuable to comment. It’s not because they don’t care about you etc.
- Remain optimistic.
Soon people will return the favor and start retweeting your post or commenting in your blog.
- Be patient.
Keep providing the support and you will get back once you are being noticed.
Wrap Up
Chinese has an old saying ” It’s a bless to give rather than receive”. I believe in good gratitude. As long as you are willing to give more than you receive. One day you will find yourself receiving more than you are giving once your blog has taken off.

Hi Lye,
I feel that what you give freely returns multiplied, be it money, support, etc.
Great point about remaining positive. By feeling good you naturally become a giver and don’t worry about receiving. You know that receiving happens effortlessly for givers.
Thanks for sharing the important reminder.

Hi Ryan,
I agree, as long we don’t think about receiving equally, what we give freely will definitely multiply.
Probably that’s my philosophy, I like to think positively and remain optimistic.
Thanks for your support Ryan. Talk soon.
Hi Lye.
Great post.
I see your point here. Blogging is not the fastest way to make an income online. It takes time, and as you say, better be prepared to give.
With great content the audience and reputation will be built bit by bit.

Hi Knut,
Precisely this is the only way to grow our blog. If we keep on thinking about receiving, we will lose our focus.
Thanks for the comments Knut. Talk soon.
HI Lye
I couldn’t agree more with you. Blogging is about everything you have mentioned. I like how you stress the importance of remaining positive and being patient. And we shouldn’t expect people to comment or RT in kind- I actually prefer it if someone comments and RTs because they got value out of my post rather than just doing so because they feel obligated.
Thanks for sharing this great post.

Hi Michael,
You have mentioned a good point. We will be more happy if someone really find value out of our post and comment about it not just to expect us to return the favor.

Hi Samuel,
I believe that’s the way. We should give more if we want to see results.

Really great post Lye,
I really love your point about giving and one of the thing every blogger must Give is time.
Being patient is one of the ebst ways to give without expecting results, and it is true that the patient dog eats the fatest bone.
Thanks so much for the great post,

Hi Oni,
I think that’s the most important thing that we need to give especially if we are not blogging full time.
I am glad that you resonate with me Oni.

Hi Lye,
Blogging is all about giving, giving and giving all the time. But once you reach a critical point you will start receiving for your hard work, which will compensate your givings without receiving anything at the first. Well, this is what I have learned in my 3 years of blogging experience.

Hey Lye,
Of course, it’s 100% about giving. I actually wrote a post not long ago: Networking: Give before Receiving. Basically, you can’t network without giving first, otherwise its useless… Awesome post Lye.

so that in case they want to see
who the heaven i am
then there i am.

but can’t help it
when i too keep on receiving.

Hi bendedspoon,
That’s a very unique way of commenting. Thanks for voicing your opinions. I appreciate it.
Blogging is supposed to express your opinion and your ideas to the world, not about getting the most visitors

Great post. One of the things I love about blogging is the realtionships I am building with other bloggers. One of the ways I give back to my commenters is I always visit their blogs and if possible will comment on their blog too. Returning some of the luv. I also RT and stumble posts so that they get more traffic to their site. If they have questions I can answer I will email or tweet them with the answers they are looking for.
When we are known to be givers it is amazing how many people will give back. An example of this for me was when I needed some techie help on my blog and several techies in the blogging community offered to help. Of course I visit their blogs regularly and spread the luv with their blogs too.

Hi Patricia,
I really admire you for giving more and receiving less. This is actually good for long term as more people get to know you, you will tend to receive more next time.
There are a lot of nice and helpful people around in the blogosphere. Anytime we need help, sure we have somebody there for us.
