Don’t Underestimate Your Responsibility As a Blogger

Responsible Blogger

Responsibility is an important element in whatever stages of our life. When we are working, we need to be responsible to our job. When we marry and have a kid, we need to be responsible to our family. We just couldn’t get rid of responsibility through our lives, can we?

What about the responsibility of a blogger?

People think that blogging is just for fun. We don’t have to be so serious. Absolutely wrong, we must be a responsible blogger if our aim is to earn money. Even if blogging is just for fun, we mustn’t publish something which is not based on facts and finger point accusation on anybody which hurts the other party.

It doesn’t make any difference whether we are online or offline as a person. In fact, we need to have a bigger responsibility as a blogger. Just because  you are interacting through a computer screen doesn’t give you any reason to run your mouth around.

I am tempted to write this post solely because there are people who place their trust on me. Whenever i recommend something, people are thanking me for the recommendation. Even though my intention of sharing is not to make any money, that doesn’t mean i can recommend anything as freely as i wish or write without getting my facts right.

No matter how big or how small your traffic is, you are bound to have some loyal readers and you need to be responsible to them.

This is especially important when comes to making money online. At times i see bloggers recommending products that they may never use. Maybe they did that to help a blogger friend or perhaps that product creator is a blogger who has lots of authority. This isn’t right.

Still, you have to show some responsibility by making an effort to understand the product better. You have your readers to answer for.

Here are some of the things we should do to be a responsible blogger:

1. Do our research and get our facts right

2. Promote products which we endorse

3. Admit our mistake when we are wrong

4. Avoid copying people’s work

5. Give credit when you borrow people’s work

6. Disclose when your link is an affiliate link

7. Be absolutely honest of who you are

8. Answer to your readers

There are millions of bloggers in the blogosphere and you have to follow a blogger pretty long to judge whether he/she is a responsible blogger. It’s easy to find you have misplaced your trust on a blogger and the consequences will mean wasting of time and money. That’s the reason why responsibility blogging is necessary and we mustn’t underestimate its importance.

What else did i miss?

What else do you practice to be a responsible blogger?

Indeed, it’s important to instil some sense of responsibility while we blog. This can help us to win trust for sure.

    Hi Lye

I totally agree with you. In fact I have stopped following or commenting on some sites when I have read things the blogger has written or how they have treated other bloggers.

Also, if someone recommends a product they know is not what it says it is, I lose respect for that marketer and definitely don’t do business with them.

There is a small group of bloggers/marketers whome I trust and listen to and do business with. They run their businesses with honesty and integrity, just as I do mine.

Great post Lye. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this important topic with us. Appreciated.

      Hi Pat,

I believe sometimes they are helping a fellow blogger. We can’t fault on that but still they need to think for the people who trusted them and rely on them for any recommendation.

You are right. Besides us have quite a number of bloggers whom we tust. Their way of running an online business is something we can learn from.

Thanks for dropping by. Appreciate your comments.

    Hi Lye,

I think the responsibilities of a blogger is broader because he has a wider audience. One wrong move and his reputation is ruined. It is not a company or an organization’s credibility but his name. Any bad mouth on the internet can reach people all over the world in just a matter of a second.

      Hi Cali,

True, because people are affected by our decision. We need to sincerely in helping people else. You are right about the wider audience. Because of that, we need to have a bigger social responsibility.

      Thanks for sharing your views.

    Hello Lye,
I am very glad that you have wrote a post about this topic. I am maybe a new blogger, but I know this is one popular problem.Of course, this is personal choice, so I don’t know will everyone follow this. I certainly hope they will. I just believe that we should try to help people not lie to them.

      Hi Daca,

New blogger should understand this beforehand. Every newbie has the potential to be an authority if he put in effort and hardwork. If the initial thinking is wrong, i can’t imagine the impact when they grow bigger.

      Thanks for visiting and commenting.

You’re right, most bloggers do it thinking there are no rules to follow, that the internet is their own little world. People take articles and don’t even credit with a link, leaving the impression they were the ones that wrote them. That’s plain lying, to the readers and eventually to themselves.
How can one be proud of his work if all he did was copy someone else’s?!

    Hi Lye,

It’s responsibility which many people including me afraid to take as we fear to failure. I think you can’t run away from responsibility so it’s better to come ahead and start taking responsibility only then you can take it more positively.

I believe it’s because there is no one to account for so we don’t feel we have a responsibility. But still we need to show a willingness to hold responsibility so people can look up to us.

I think any time you choose to come into public view, whether blogging or just walking down the street, we have an obligation to conduct ourselves with decorum and ethical standards. And when it comes to blogging, people are counting on us to show that standard not only as something to look up to, but because the world is –in the main– a safe and decent place.

    Right on Lye!

Being responsible is directly related to long term success and happiness whether it is online or offline.

Admitting to mistakes is a crucial one Lye. If a blogger admits to his/her mistakes instead of trying to beat around the bush and covering it up, makes me want to revisit his/her site (O:

And what about them bloggers that are dishonest about their online income. Falsifying facts really is a plague in the blogosphere right now.

Falsifying of income can be hard to verify at times. We just have to be careful. This is also the reason why i don’t trust those sales pages only which tells you how you can earn money in 1/2 hours even with evidence.

If i have to buy, i prefer to purchase something from a fellow blogger whom i always follow.
