6 Signs Your Blog Is Heading For Its Death (And Small Suggestion To Revive It)

RIP

Is your blog dying? Sound serious huh! You need plenty of work to get things right for your blog but just one task you do wrong will cause your blog to head for its death.

Starting a blog is easy.

Growing a blog is damn difficult.

A blog can be born easily but it’s not difficult to see its death. How many blogs have we seen leaving unattended and and waiting for its death sentence? As a blogger, you need to take note of some signs which are hinting you that your blog is dying.

6 Signs Your Blog Is Heading For Its Death

1. You don’t have a strong body

I need to put this as number 1. Without a healthy and strong body, there is no way we can complete the task in time. You can’t be falling sick all the time and leave a long break of posting on your blog.

Blogging needs plenty of energy. There is a lot of work need to be done for a successful blog. Just imagine you are always sick, your mind is not working normally. This will surely affect your content quality.

Suggestion: We always know exercise is good. Do we practice it? You have to ask yourself. It’s good to spend at least 20-30 minutes daily for some workout even you have a busy schedule. Simple workout such as jogging is good enough. Remember to eat more fruits that can help you to build up your immune system. A healthy body will always be your strongest asset.

2. Your blog traffic is going downhill

Things are not doing good for your blog. Your blog stats is going downhill. Not only you have seen lower traffic but your subscribers is declining. This is totally discouraging.

We have to admit sometimes we are too obsessed with numbers. If you are used to seeing few hundred visitors a day, what will you think if the count drop to 50 visitors a day. You are not motivate to write anymore.  Soon you will lose your interest and leave your blog rotting.

Suggestion: First of all, do not feel discourage. You need to know what is going wrong. Does your content sucks? Where does most of your traffic source comes from? Find out the real cause and remedy it instead of leaving as it is and do nothing about it.

3. Writing becomes a chore for you

If you have to drag yourself to open up your WordPress dashboard and start writing, you are in real trouble. Writing is your most important task in blogging. You need to enjoy writing.

If you feel writing is a chore, either you are lacking of something to say or you are lacking an interest in your niche. Once the interest is lost, it’s quite difficult to rekindle it.

Suggestion: We do suffer writers blocks at time but there are ways to solve it. You can try different type of content such as list post, interview, product review, upcoming bloggers, roundups  and collaboration of post with other bloggers. Lacking of ideas is due to lack of passion or interest. The problem is harder to tackle.

Remember your mission when you set up the blog and try to focus on the positive rather than the negative. Identify a successful blogger as your mentor and work towards his achievements.

4. You are not making friends

You need to like everyone out there before you are being like by others. You are not here to make enemies. Friendship is extremely important in the blogging world. Nobody likes to visit a blogger with a hostile personality.

You are not alone blogging. Time to time, you need others help and you got to help others.

Suggestion: Networking is a must. Go ahead commenting on people’s blog, follow your fellow bloggers and like their fan page. You need to widen your social circle and not limiting on a certain amount of bloggers. Social media sites and blog bookmarking sites are there for you to join. It will be a waste to give them the miss.

5. You are not earning any income despite working hard

That’s real case for most bloggers. You have a big goal of living off an internet lifestyle, slowly your dream shattered and you are facing the reality of starting an online business. You work very hard. But are you working smart enough?

Suggestion: I can’t help you on this. My advice is learn from bloggers who made it there and stay there for long. People like Pat Flynn and Glen Allsop.

6. Your blog is attracting dust for months

It’s a bit sad to know someone who just disappear from the blogging scene without any reason. There maybe reason we won’t know. Probably she/he will be back because there isn’t any farewell or official message.

In case you are thinking of taking a long break, you need to prepare yourself for a huge loss in traffic. By not posting for months, you are losing the momentum to drive your blog traffic up. Most likely you will be losing some subscribers there as people don’t like to see a blog without update lying in their reader.

Suggestion: There are many reasons behind this. Majority is due to lost of passion and tired of blogging day in day out. Your mentality play a big part in whether you will return to the blogosphere. Decide on the best for yourself. If you are mentally prepared, you will come back someday. Else i have no doubt you will quit for the second time.

Conclusion

Those are signs that your blog is heading for the death and i hope you are not seeing that now. To maintain your passion for months or even years require a big effort from you. If you are determine to kill your blog, no suggestion from anyone can stop you from doing so.

Even when your blog dies, don’t delve on it and just move on. Who knows another bigger project is waiting for you. The opportunity is limitless online. You’ll have to find the right one.

What are the signs you see which cause a blog to head for its death?

Feeling discouraged is one thing, but giving up on your blog is another.

We all feel discouraged, and overworked, and blocked, and even unmotivated at times. And those numbers sometimes can be a bit of a bummer.

But it’s not always going to be sunshine and roses, hugs and puppies. Sometimes it’s just darn hard work.

      Hi Delena,

Discouragement can link to negative mentality and cause you to give up. All these negative think is linked in some ways.

“It’s not always going to be sunshine and roses, hugs and puppies” We should remember that.

      Thanks for the comments.

Taking too long break from your blog can cause the reason to shut down your blog for forever. This is simple reason but never considered by many bloggers.

      Hi Sam,

Taking a long break will see us losing our interest slowly. Soon we won’t be bother to update again. There should be some planning if we are taking a break.

I do experience writer’s block from time to time, and it can be difficult to work up the energy to work on my blog.

I find that if I set small, easy to achieve goals from time-to-time it helps a lot. Accomplishing smaller goals gives me more drive to continue with my blog.

Setting small goals is a good way to keep our interest and passion going. Once you achieve one, you have the motivation to go for another one.

Interesting read, nice parallels to health of human and blog health. I ran into this post because of submission over at BizSugar, and thought I’d drop by and read.

Like Delena mentions, and is human nature, discouragement is one thing, giving up is another, yet in my almost 20 years online, I’d have to say that the frustrations and giving up are the root of most failure. Of course, there is much more beyond that, part of it relating to what kind of marketer we each are, but at the root, those things play big roles in the results.

I’ve had times where I’ve seen visitors drop off as well. However, I can also track that back to certain things I’ve done, or in most cases not done, to cause that drop off. Social networking, for instance is a very big part of my traffic generation strategies, and I find when I fail to network as much, I can see nice dips in traffic.

In the end, allot goes back to people’s failure to track as well. It’s a bit hard to fix problems when people don’t use analytics to begin with, which means most times, they have no clue about why things aren’t working.

Nice post, one vote up for a visitor from BizSugar :)

PS. The tick box for comment submission to show people we’re not scammers has blank text. Well, it’s not blank, but it’s the same color as the background and people can’t read it. It could affect your comments :)

      Hi Jim,

Welcome and nice to see you here.

I agree with that about frustration and discouragement. Ultimately it falls to whether you are able to take any setbacks or run away from setbacks.

For people who never give up, they are persistence to find the root cause and search for the solution. People who run away will fall to failure easily.

I really appreciate you taking your time to drop by and post your comment.

Thanks for telling me about the comment tick box. I am still figuring out which setting to change. Really nice to meet you Jim. Hope to see you around.

The bigger problem is that many blogs don’t even come to life… After a couple of days of enthusiasm, person doesn’t see a comment or a retweet in days and days… How to push trough the initial blockade of a non traffic environment?

And did your blog came to life at all?

      Hi Bojan,

In the early days of blogging, we have to accept that. Newbie bloggers should understand that’s the reality of blogging in the early stages, no comments and no retweets.

Interesting question. I like to know how you interpret a blog coming to life.

I think it depends on what you aim for. Most important thing is people can find something helpful out of our post.

      Thanks for dropping by Bojan.

Some of these “signs” are more than just signs that your blog is dying… some of them are signs that your blog needs to be put out of its misery. It’s not an easy decision to kill off a blog you’ve put a lot of work into, but if you’re having trouble coming up with content and it’s not earning any income… you may just need to take your blog behind the woodshed and do the right thing.

      Hi Dave,

The day will come if our passion and interest for our particular niche is lost. It’s definitely not an easy decision but sometimes we have to make a choice.

As i have mentioned, it’s not the end of the world and we got to move on.

      Thanks for the comment.

Surely it won’t feel good. If people have that kind of thinking, i don’t think they will quit easily right? They decided to call it a day due to lack of interest, how much effort they put in doesn’t mean anything.

    Hi Lye

Blogging is very time consuming. Unless there is real commitment then it is easy to get discouraged and give up!

Even when there is a real desire to succeed, for me the thing that has helped the most is having blogging buddies to share with. Cos some are further on than me, they can share their experiences and for those newbies, I can share mine.

This has really been a big boost to my confidence and also helped keep me on track. Nothing like a few challenges and also being inspired by others who are working hard and achieving success.

Also another danger is information overload where it is easy to get overwhelmed, get discouraged and give up. So now I tend to ask my blogging/marketing friends any questions I have and not read too much that will only confuse me!

Enjoyed the post Lye. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi Pat,

Indeed blogging is very time consuming. As you can see from my post frequency, i am cutting down my posting time to spend more time with my family.

Information overload is one additional task i am dealing with. I am slimming down the blogs in my reader, only visit and connect with bloggers that i network with.

It takes a big effort in blogging Pat. So many stuff need to be taken care of. We just have to work smartly.

Thanks for taking the time to give your comments. Much appreciated.

All good points. For beginning blogger I think battling discouragement is critical. It take a while to learn what works and what doesn’t work and mistakes will be made. I’m sure all successful bloggers made their share before they realized success. Wish you the best.
