6 Skills That Will Surely Make Our Blogging Life Easier If We Know Well

Skill

Blogging should be the most difficult way to earn money in this world yet there are so many people jumping into it everyday. Living a comfortable internet lifestyle is not a dream anymore but the percentage of people becoming successful is a minority.

Blogger’s job is not as simple as filling up blocks of letters in your post and publish them to your blog. Your job is not just that. In fact you need a few skills to make your blogging life easier. Skills which will help you to attract more traffic and turn that traffic into potential revenue source. What are the required skills that a blogger must know:

1. Writing skills

You don’t have to write like Shakespeare but it’s not advisable to see too many mistakes in your sentence. Using a lot of powerful words will not help you to become a great writer. Most important is to write short sentences which people understand easily. Words that come from your heart. What are you trying to express, just jolt it down simple and concise.

Your writing habit may be difficult to change. However, you can compensate by develop your own writing style and voice. Your main job is to take care some basic writing criteria of a post which is to:

  • Create an attractive headlines
  • Format the post
  • Use sub header and bullet points

Be true to yourself when you write. There is no way to imitate the writing style of other people and you shouldn’t be doing that. Your visitors will resonate to your voice instead of seeing others voice in your post.

2. Coding Skills

I am a coding idiot. I always envy people who understand HTML and CSS to make their blog prettier. Though there is a lot of place for you to learn about HTML and CSS, we are just not determined and daring enough to learn about this. For people who loves everything about computer, it seems so easy for them to learn all these programming skills. For people who simply have no interest in computer technology, the learning curve is a bit steeper.

Somehow we shouldn’t be discourage, knowing some HTML and CSS is helpful if we need to tweak our blog theme. We are not aiming to be a designer or to build a WordPress theme from scratch. We probably need to change some margins, paddings or even colors which looks basic and easier for us to pick up. No matter what, it’s a great help to ourselves to pick up some basic HTML and CSS skills.

3. Graphics Skills

Are you designing your own logo and header? Do you know how to use Photoshop or Gimp? Well, i don’t. I have to outsource for freelancer to design my logo. That’s why i am very excited when Pat Flynn announced that he is going to set up webinars teaching his readers how to use Photoshop and Gimp. For people who possesses the knowledge, your blogging life will be easier as there are a lot of advantages.

  • You can design your logo or header
  • You can design your Twitter background
  • You can design your Facebook landing page
  • You can design your own ebook covers

Just imagine you can use it for anything related to graphics. You don’t have to rely on others to do this for you which will cost you time and money. Once you possess the skills, you can use it anytime on demand.

4. Speaking Skills

Podcast and videos are getting more popular and it’s another way to express your content. If your post is showing your writing skills, then podcasts and videos are showing your speaking skills. Not many bloggers are comfortable of getting their voice live in their blog. You may write well but you may not speak well. Speak well in the sense of no fumbling or muttering. Are you able to speak in proper English? I speak “Singlish” (Singaporean style English). I am still trying to overcome the fear of getting my voice out. Someday i will, please give me more time :)

5. Marketing skills

You can’t just depend on people to find your blog and read your content. You need to go out there and promote yourself. Leverage your network with other bloggers is going to be a big help. Are you visiting other blogs, commenting on other blogs and collaborating with other bloggers? Bloggers are known to be poor marketers. We shouldn’t be if we can spare some of our time to start creating relationship with others virtually and physically.

Bloggers are never known to be alone. We need help as well as helping others along the way. Start building a platform to show off our marketing efforts.

6. Investing skills

Investing in blogging include money and time. To be successful in blogging, you can’t rely on freebies alone to blog your way through. There are a lot of tools that can help to improve your blogging experience. You need to judge which will help you exactly. Investing on a wrong tool will be a waste of your money. You maybe looking for an affiliate program to promote. You have to choose the right one. It will be a waste of your time if the affiliate program you have chosen has a hard time in getting it sold.

Read more reviews from people you trusted will help you to reduce the chances of wasting your time and money. Ultimately you want your money and time worth spending.

Conclusion

I won’t say these skills are essential but it certainly makes our blogging life easier and smoother if we know them well. There are a lot of tutorials circulating online. We just have to make sure we read it up to get a better understanding. Just remember any skills you gain will be yours forever. No harm in learning a new skill that will help you to become a better blogger.

What other skills do you think we need to know?

Do the skills above make your blogging life easier?

    Hi Lye

You covered this topic well. I have been blessed with my amazing blogging/marketing friends being there for me when I get stuck.

Like you I don’t know code and so the techies come to the rescue. I do love writing so that hasn’t been a problem. I could write all day but that doesn’t make me sales lol

Would be interested to tune in to Pat Flynn’s teaching as I have always had my neice’s expertise with my graphics. Now she is full-time at university, therefore won’t be so readily available. I get Pat’s newsletter, so hope he lets us know as soon as it will be available.

Although I also believe we don’t have to be good at everything. Can collaborate with others and share our skills and/or outsource too.

      Hi Pat,

If we do not know the skills above, the best way is to outsource or seek for friends help. It’s wonderful to have friends for advice whenever we need.

Can’t wait for Pat’s webinar to come out so we can learn some tricks.

Not knowing these skills shouldn’t be the reason or excuse to build a successful blog. As you have mentioned, we can always collaborate with others or outsource.

      Thanks for the comments.

    Hi Lye

I agree with Pat here in that you have covered this topic very well. Points 1 and 6 resonate with me the most because as you know I am a huge advocate of writing well and investing in our blogs. Thanks for the awesome post bro.

      Hi Michael,

#1 will pose the least problem to you brother. For non-native English bloggers, we have to pick up and improve along the way.

      Thanks for visiting and commenting.

    Hi Lye,

Six skills that will definitely help you along your way.I think coding and graphics is probably what’s the most challenging as most people are technically challenged.

Just to add one more ;-) , I think the Skill of Patience is another one. Without that you won’t have stick it out when dealing with the other skills.

    Thanks for sharing!

      Hi Michele,

These two are the main culprits that hold people back. Especially people without any technical background, fear will stop them from trying.

Skill of patience, very very important as most of the blogs die because of that.

      Thanks for the comments.

Regarding #1: You are absolutely right. Without writing skills, you can’t be a blogger. People have to understand what you are talking about.
As for short sentences, yes, you’re absolutely correct. I believe I read in a book by Andy Maslen that the ideal length for a sentence is 12-14 words. Anything longer than that, you might want to break it up into separate sentences.
Also, “write the way you talk” is good advice.
I read what I’ve written, out loud, to check whether it sounds good, fluent and natural. I’ve found that this helps a lot.

As for #3, graphic skills… be careful. It’s not enough to know how to work the software. You have to develop your aesthetic sense. This is only achieved by looking at tons of artwork (both good and bad — YES, you have to examine bad art, also) and reading essays on established artists.
Looking at art online is great, but not nearly enough. Your local art galleries and museums are your best friends here. Go out and expose yourself to stuff. Get design books from the library. It doesn’t matter how old they are, there’s great design from a hundred years ago.

If you want to take care of the graphic identity of your site on your own, get someone you trust to advise you. By that, I mean someone you know has taste and will ask hard questions. THAT is essential — asking hard questions. Good design is anything but random.

(Boy oh boy, was that a long comment or what?)

      Hi J M Bell,

That was a long one but you have pointed some important notes.

I agree with what you mentioned for #3. Even after we know how to use the graphics software, we need to have some design sense to make a good graphic/image. Just because we know the software doesn’t mean we are good designer.

      Thanks for the comments.

    Hi Lye,
Great post! Does it count if you have some of the skills (writing, speaking) and your coach has the rest!?!? It would be awesome to have all those skills – do you!?
    Perhaps in time…

      Hi Lori,

We will know some and we have to seek for help for others. Most important of all is the writing and speaking as it represents your voice. Graphics etc can be outsource to freelancers.

It’s good to know all but we will have a better understanding if we learn.

      Thanks for commenting Lori.

All those skills Lye, it makes my eyes water just thinking about them. They are all useful for a blogger, but I would need a brain the size of a planet to acquire them all. This is where a mentor comes in handy. A mentor can point you in the right direction, and outsource skills whenever it is easier to do so.

    Hi Lye,

I liked your points and way of their presention, simply amazing. I think you have mentioned basic points which are easy to learn and implement as well apart from first one, as writing a unique and interesting post always like a nightmare.

But yes if you read more about particular topic here and there then you can write one as well. So here I want to say that you need to be dedicated and serious about your work only then you can succeed.

Lye, I want to ask one question what are the different ways to earn money through blog.

      Hi Priya,

For me, coding and writing is a bid challenge. I believe for writing, what we can do is to write down our thoughts and make sure we do not make any grammar mistakes.

Attitude is indeed important as you have pointed it out. Without it, we won’t be anywhere successful.

Regarding different ways of making money, i am surely not the right person to tell you. You can visit SteveScottSite.com for more info.

Great list Lye. When I look at myself here, I’m very much lacking in the coding and graphics areas. Those are the two places that are still holding me back, so I’m really hoping to make some progress there over this next year. The person that truly has mastered all these things is unstoppable.

You always provide great value with what you do Lye.

You did a great job of covering the basic skills needed to be a successful blogger. I think #1 – a great headline – is the most important thing, because without it, no one will read the post. I think #5 marketing is highly underrated and something that I personally am trying to improve upon. Just like anything else, the more you do something, the better you become. I enjoy your blog and look forward to reading your future posts.

      Hi Dan,

I don’t have much creativity on the headline part, just make it straight to the point. From search engine, feeds and link, headline is what determine whether your post is being read.

It’s really pleasing to know you enjoy the blog.

Thanks for the support and comments.

This is a great list of skills. Basically what it looks like it boils down to is that you have to be a great business owner and know the ins and outs of the industry.

I don’t think you necessarily have to be an expert in all of those areas, but having at least some knowledge is definitely beneficial. At the very least you should be able to tell if you are getting a fair price if you are hiring out to complete any of the work, and know when the work is being done in a quality manner.

      Hi Eugene,

Even we are not expert in any of this, it shouldn’t stop us from starting a blog/business online. As what Dan had said above, the more we do, the better we will be,

We should still try to get our hands on the basic as this will improve our ability and understanding for our online business.

      Thanks for visiting and commenting.

You’re so right here, Lye as these are the basics elements that one must need if he wants to set up a blog. Skills for writing must not fade because it is literally seen if you lose your zest for writing and hence, you created a crappy output for readers which is a big NO.

These are all wonderful skills. I must admit that blogging is not a cup of tea. It takes hard work for your blog to be successful and the skills you have shared are also very essential if you want your blog to be successful. Great writing skills are very important as no one is prepared something that does not make sense or has broken grammar and poor sentence structure.
