3 Questions You Need to Ask to Build Your Email List Wisely

Opt in

I have two email accounts in Google. One is specially dedicate to Findmyblogway. Recently i just feel that my email account is too cluttered. There is a need to clean it up. Too many mails lying around which i never bother to organize or delete.

I remembered the time when i was obsessed in subscribing to numerous blogs. I am not referring to RSS here but the opt-in form you normally see at the sidebar. Because of the freebie that comes with it, i willingly fill up my email address and opt into the email list.

I got to admit i am not very organized in person. There are so many useless mails filling up in my email account and i actually never do anything about it. I finally decided to delete all the unwanted mails as well as unsubscribe with newsletter from bloggers which does not help me at all.

“Money is in the list”, That’s the advice most of us know because a lot of A-list bloggers tell us that. I have no argument with that. It’s a great way to build relationship and interact with people inside the email list. It’s simple to have an opt-in form displaying on your blog but it’s really not as simple as that.

Sometimes they really sound so easy. “Money is in the list” “You need to build your list from day 1″. It makes me wonder whether their real motive is just to promote the autoresponders and buy from their affiliate links.

Before you set up your email list, you need to really ask yourself some questions.

Do you have a plan for your email list

People may surrender their email address easily because of your lead magnet. What now when you have people in your list? Do you prepare your newsletter in a form where it can send consistently at the dates you have set and provide value which people can’t find in your blog?

If the things you have said can be find everywhere else, what make it so special to opt into your email list?

Have you plan how often you want to send a newsletter to your subscribers and what content you want to send? All these need some planning beforehand.

Are You Focusing on your blog credibility

Why do you have to build your list from day 1? If you start late then more money will be lost. How true is that? I sincerely believe building a email list is the same as building your blog. If you start building your list from day 1, does it means you can see your first paycheck in 6 months time.

Why don’t you spend the time to focus on building your credibility for your blog. Your blog is new and you are a newbie, are you able to provide the value to people who subscribe? Do you have a valuable lead magnet that can attract people to subscribe?

Unless you are Tristan Higbee who has been blogging for seven years and once he started BloggingBookshelf.com, he created a storm.

Are You Brushing up your skills and knowledge

You need to brush up your knowledge and experience in your niche. Till then you understand the market well and have the capability to write an ebook which is helpful to your readers. Make it your lead magnet then and start building your list.

Knowledge is an important aspect in blogging. As you understand deeper on a subject, you will know what is the things people need and look for.

Mistake By Me

If you don’t have a valuable lead magnet and a plan, do you think you can attract a high number of subscribers? I am actually speaking from experience as a blogger and a subscriber.

As you can see, i took down my opt-in as i feel guilty of not sending my subscribers anything valuable. This is an example of bad mistake and bad planning. I listen to the A-list bloggers, start building the list from day 1. I look for some PLR articles and use them as lead magnet. Bad move.

I use Aweber(not affiliate link) and paid $19/month which i never fully utilize. I have since cancelled my account with them. The above three questions that i listed is what i will be focusing on from now. You will only see my opt-in form once i think i am ready for it. Money lost, so be it. It’s totally fine with me. Anyway it’s never too late to earn some money back.

I know some of you may disagree with me. My only advice is go start with Mailchimp(not affiliate link) if you want to build your list from day 1. First of all it’s free as long your subscribers count is below 500 and your sent out mails is below 6000/month.

You don’t have to worry about monthly subscription fees every month and it provide the features of what an autoresponders do.

Subscribers Point of View

As i have mentioned above,  i opt-in to the email list in several blogs but i ended deleted most of them. I don’t like to receive mails that promote products. I hate it more when i keep receiving reminders when the date due is reaching.

Even though i have unsubscribe most of the blogs, i still keep a few. But i just want to recommend one blogger you need to have in your email account.

Pat Flynn from SmartPassiveIncome

I never hesitate to admit that i hold high regards to Pat for what he has done. He is a well established and famous blogger and i don’t have to promote his blog. But i really hoped you can opt-in to his list and emulate his model. I kept every of his mail so far. There are some advice which he never publish in his blog.

In total, i received 20+ mails from him and not even one is a mail he sent to promote any of his affiliates. I can see his planning and he emphasize strongly on readers benefits. This is a fine example of how an email list should be done.

Are you seeing success with your opt ins?

What lesson can we learn from you?

Great points Lye. I set up my opt-in at the IEJ without any ebook to “trade” for emails. However I am doing a huge 3-part SEO series being delivered on-site, via RSS, and finally via email. Each of these three channels gets a single piece of the pie, so if you want the entire thing, you need to subscribe to them all.

So far it’s increased subscriber counts across the board.

I opt-in to a lot of lists for research purposes. Some of the internet marketers send nothing but garbage, but as you mention some like Pat Flynn do a much better job of providing additional content.

Personally I don’t see any issue with promoting affiliate products that you use via your email list. But if that’s all you’re sending me, unless you’re a point of my research, your emails will never be read.

      Hi Robert,

At least you have some idea on your email list, that’s very good. It’s really important to know what you can provided for your subscribers.

I tend to opt in for some valuable tutorials which can help me to become a better blogger. Most made the same mistake, seldom follow up. Pat Flynn indeed do a better job on that.

You are on point. If every mail i received is a mail promoting your affiliate, i will be piss off by that.

      Thanks for the comments.

    Hi Lye

I have only just started publishing my fortnightly newsletter. Had to get some readers and decent amount of traffic to my site first.

If I did do a product review then it would be as part of my newsletter and wouldn’t be all the time. At the moment it is just a new part of my blog and I give my readers information before it goes up on my site.

Also with my newsletter, as with my blog I am encouraging input from my readers. Them saying what they would like, not just me doing one way conversations.

Liked your take on it all Lye. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi Pat,

I resonate with your decision on having a newsletter now. You have established an awesome network, i can say you are pretty well-known in the blogosphere.

People know what type of person you are. It’s good time to set up one now as i believe you have pretty decent traffic.

Hey Pat, just back from your site, you have a new look. I like it. The logo is fantastic. Are you still using Headway?

    Hi Lye,

Kudos to you for following your guidance and stepping away from the herd.

You pose interesting questions that all list builders need to ask themselves.

A big mistake that I see? Mindless list building. It’s like a drone “Build Your List, Build Your List” buzzes in the mind of some bloggers all the time. They never stop to ask themselves the question: Why Am I Building My List?

When you are able to answer that question clearly you will either stop building the list of rededicate yourself to building your list a ‘la Pat Flynn. Loads of value presented in a way that helps the subscriber make make money without asking the subscriber for money every 5 minutes.

Thanks for sharing the contrarian point of view, loved it ;)

    Have a powerful day Lye!

      Hi Ryan,

Can’t believe i miss that simple question. “Why am i building a list”?I think we have been brainwashed too much on “money is in the list”, we are just thinking how to make money from the list but people are still looking for valuable information in their email account.

Also, I wanted to say a big thank you for introducing my to Pat Flynn’s Smart Passive Income Blog. Just the aesthetics and layout of the blog make you want to stay and explore. I subscribed to his blog and I absolutely know I will gain a lot of value and insights from him.

You are very welcome. There is nothing wrong in having an opt in and i am not encouraging that mentality. Just wish for planning and more value when we want people to subscribe to our newsletter.

Pat Flynn is an awesome blogger. His story is amazing. I am glad you signed up his newsletter. It’s really good stuff.

    Hey Lye,
I totally understand what you are talking about.
When I started my blog I planned for it to be a blog full of my personal ramblings and travel stories. Somehow, it took it’s own direction and I am doing something completely different now.

A few days back a friend told me I should start building a list, especially after writing a post that at the moment has 180 comments. So I read up little bit on that. I knew there is no way I will pay 19$ for Aweber when I don’t even know what I am doing. Fortunately, I heard about MailChimp and signed up.

It is free and up to 1000 subscribers/6000 e-mail (not 500 subs). So I put up my opt-in form today and I will hope for the best :)

Although, I am writing a free report for my subscribers and if someone subscribes before I put it up, I will send them a copy anyway.

I also have in mind how I plan to run the newsletter. I don’t plan to have any sale pitches. I don’t plan to send more than 5 mails a month and I do plan to make them just short reminders of my blog, send a tip or two before I write a post about it, or mention some cool free tools they can use.

Of course all this will evolve and change after a while but i don know I will not create a newsletter that will annoy people.

Hope it will work. All the best!

      Hi Brankica,

Thanks for correcting my mistake on the subscribers numbers. This makes people one more reason to sign up. 1000 subscribers is a huge number.

It’s great for you to have some plans on how you want to run your newsletter. This certainly makes thing easier. If you plan it well, sure i will work. All the best.

      Thanks for the comments.

The approach that has worked best for me is a three-part process:

1 – Have a great freebie for signing up. An eBook, or video series, or even a training series. If it’s free and valuable to your audience it will draw them in.

2 – Keep in touch. You need to keep your company/website/etc. in people’s minds. I’ve found that once a week is overkill. But every other week, or even once a month seems to work pretty well.

3 – Make you contact with your audience count. Those frequent e-mails need to have value. A simple “Hey, how ya doin’?” is a nice idea, but sending out e-mail list-exclusive content every so often will make people very glad to have signed-up.

Awesome post overall, thanks for sharing!

I am just like you Lye. I too used to enjoy subscribing to new blogs in order to get a freebie. I was like that for a good while but fortunately I managed to break myself out of that habit.

Those are 3 important questions you should ask yourself, especially the first one. You really need a plan you can implement effectively or you will lose a lot of subscribers pretty quickly.

I have been hearing a lot about mailchimp lately and I think I am going to try them out and see how it goes. Thanks for the tips and sharing your advice.

    Hey Lye,

You’re so right about looking at your list from a subscribers perspective. We generally always look at our lists from the blogging end even though we know those things we look for in lists we subscribe to.

If we take the best from the ones we love and craft ours with those items in mind, it’ll be an amazing list! It really does have to be treated like an entirely different blog in some ways where you’re always creating new content for the list.

Great to see you here. I believe it’s quite common to look from the blogger’s view if we are sending the newsletter. Sometimes we tend to miss some details that subscribers want.

Those good ones are clearly great model for us to emulate as we know we are captivated by their how they go ahead with their mail list.

This was a great post, and I completely agree. Not only is organization entirely vital, but you also have to make your newsletters very easy for your subscribers. Some of them are likely to be just as disorganized as you describe in this post. In that case, you want them to be so drawn to your newsletter because of content, dependability, humor, and whatnot that they immediately click on your email when it arrives in their inbox.

Also, I adore MailChimp! Not only do I like the price (free!) but I like the web conferences they give for explaining and teaching all the features they have available.

    Thanks again!
