Introduction of My Comment Policy

Comment Policy

I have been ranting complaining a lot in the previous posts about why i prefer less traffic and why i hate to see people without a Gravatar when they comment. Recently i have been deleting comments that slip through to the post which i find adds no value to the post at all. I feel there is a need for me to write down a comment policy in case you are still puzzling why your comments are deleted.

I truly respect every reader who takes his/her precious time to read my blog and hearing what i have to say about blogging topics. I am also appreciative to people who show their great support when they try to join in the discussion by giving their views at the end of the post. That is the reason why i don’t practice comment moderation in this blog.

The amount of comments deleted so far has prompted me to introduce a comment policy. Well you don’t require a big blog to introduce one. As long you feel you need it, go ahead and create one. This is what i have in mind.

Comments Policy and Guidelines

Comments are always welcome in Findmyblogway and we encourage you to leave your views behind whenever you finished reading a post. Disagreement to the points i raised out is totally fine as i love to hear different views.

Almost 99% spam comments were successfully blocked by G.A.S.P and Akismet plugin but there is 1% which can slip by. It’s down to me to moderate and delete them if they fail to meet the guidelines below:

  • Your comments must be on-topic, no spam please
  • No personal attack on other commenters
  • Not using your real names
  • You must not post irrelevant and affiliate links in the comments
  • Commenting without Gravatar is fine only when your comment adds value (I highly encourage you to get one)
  • No bad or vulgar language can be used (Coincidentally just as i am writing this, i received a comment with all the f**k language aiming at me)
  • Post a legitimate and operating url
  • I reserve the right to delete your comments or comluv link if your comment fail to comply to the above guidelines

That’s about all. My comment guidelines are pretty simple. I do not want to sound nasty at all but i have to adopt this when i see a lot human spammers trying to degrade the quality of this blog. My loyal readers who are always keen to interact with me and add value to this blog through commenting should have nothing to worry about.

What about you?

Are you considering implementing a comment policy in your blog?

Do you think it’s necessary?

Ultimately i want us to enjoy our time here. Both of us need to play a part in creating a vibrant community here.

I truly enjoyed the interaction with you and please keep the great conversation going. If you have any questions, concerns or comments, please give me a shout through the contact page.

Cheers,

Lye Kuek – I am so with you on this.

I notice that slowly more logging friends are implementing a commenting policy, some of the spam and link grabbing stuff posted (especially on dofollow and comluv blogs) is just ridiculous.

I’m moderately ruthless at the moment, but a good commenting policy may well save a little more time by putting off some of the really daft stuff. I’m pretty easy going, but I do get quite pissed off when spammer copy and paste bits of other people’s comment (or my own)…

An alternative to enforcing gravatars is to replace the ‘mystery man’ logo with a logo for your blog… Then again, I suppose the point is that major spammers often don’t have one at all…

Oh well. Best of luck mate. The ongoing quest against spam!

      Hi Jym,

Sometimes we need to as we are simply deleting too many comments. In case people turn violent over their comments got deleted, think they will feel better after reading the comment policy.

I really buy the idea of having my own blog logo instead of the mystery man. Got to figure out how to do it.

Thanks for the comments and suggestion.

Hopefully I will keep a warm spot in your heart for comments. ;)

I feel you on this. I used to let borderline stuff slip by, as long as I was sure they at least wrote it themselves (and assuming it made it out of the spam bin.)

I am also being a little bit more discerning. While I do not require a Shakespearean sonnet quality comment, I expect the person to at least make it clear they took the time to read the article and have “something” to say.

      Hi Steve,

      You are always welcome here.

We don’t meant to be nasty to our readers but if they cannot fulfill basic courtesy of reading the article and making a comment out of it, we should not be too kind as we have our small reputation and quality of the blog to take care of.

      Thanks for dropping by.

    Hi Lye,
I agree. It’s often hard to moderate comments. Even with GASP and Akismet, I often find that human spammers get through as well. Definitely the lack of a gravatar is often a big hint of possible spam.

Generally, I have very similar rules to yours. I read the comments much more carefully when there’s no avatar. Plus, I don’t like when people spam their links in their comments.

      Hi Richard,

Now i am starting to associate spammers are people without a Gravatar. I try not to be mean and delete straight away. Like you, i will still read the comment and act accordingly.

      Thanks for sharing your views.

    Nice post,

Thanks for sharing these all details. I am totally agreed with your thoughts for how we should do commenting and from my point of view we should stop spam comment persons.

    Hi Lye,

I totally agree with you. As you know, I recently complained about spammy and faceless comments on my blog.

I have always deleted spammy comments. I still keep meaningful ones without a gravatar, at least for now.

Well done for introducing your comment policy.

    All the best,

      Hi Mavis,

I read that post of yours. Well spammers simply don’t listen.

I will just keep on deleting comments that add no value to the post.

Thanks for the comments and the support.

    Hi Lye!

I agree with you 100% to have a policy when commenting just to prevent spam comments.

I am new here to your blog but you have a good one cause you post a policy on your blog. It’s a good thing to your visitors to avoid irrelevant comments and specially to new visitors.

A comment policy is definitely necessary as comments form part of your website. Poor comments will just annoy future visitors to the site that are looking for value in the comments. Allowing poor comments to slip through also lose a blogger some credibility in my opinion as it shows they haven’t had time to properly moderate.

There is one comment on this post that I think adds no value (abiding by no personal attacks) and I think you should perhaps introduce a minimum comment length to help further prevent comments that just want a link.

You’re generous enough to include Do Follow commentluv here so I think commentors should take the time to actually add value

I have no choice as i am a bit frustrated by the spam comments i received recently.

Well, i will see who he is. If he/she is somebody i know, most likely i will let him pass.

      Thanks for the awesome comments.

    Short list, i like it.
Truth is, these are just common sense rules every blogger should follow, but the sad reality is that some difficult people really need these written down or else they’ll never learn.

I like the fact that you clearly set out your comment policy – it means that anyone who drops by with a pointless comment at least knows that they are doing something wrong. On my personal blog then I very carefully vet any comments but haven’t published an official set of guidelines – maybe it’s something I should consider doing?

      Hi Pete,

I have set the guidelines straight forward. That means any comment i think it’s spam will be deleted. At least people know why after reading it. I don’t want to seen as a nasty guy.

If you are deleting a lot of comments, you should implement a comment policy.

      Thanks for visiting and commenting.

Not all bloggers actually provide their own comment policy. My point of view on that matter, I think it’s the best way to inform readers the Do’s and Don’ts in making a comment on a particular blog. Just in my case, I feel disappointed whenever my comment is rejected even if its a sensible one. So having a comment policy is a good idea.

      Hi Maria,

I think it’s good to have one especially you know you have a lot of spam or one sentence comment to deal with. This is also to let people know what i encourage and discourage.

      Thanks for the comments.

I think having a good policy for commenting is important. If you have a blog with loads of low quality comments it can put new readers off really quickly, its a really negative first impression.
