The Correct Way To Comment Before It Goes To My Spam Box

Lock Spam Comments

Commenting on other blogs is the most easiest and direct way to gain backlinks, publicity, establish relationship and traffic to your site. Every bloggers love to see lots of comment in their blog/site. They welcome comments and it’s a social proof that the post is popular and people love to join in the discussion.

Because it’s easy and convenient, people abuse it. That’s why we see a lot of spam comments who contribute nothing but polluting a healthy site with lots of self promotion.

I have been getting a lot of spam comments recently. I am known to be quite lenient in approving comments here if you know me well. I don’t mind if your comments is only two or three sentences long. Hoever there are some type of comments which i am totally disgusted.

These comments will not see the light here if it falls to the following:

  • You have not read my post at all

I expect you to read my post and comment based on the topic that i am talking about. Not telling me something which is unrelated at all.

  • You are not using your real name

I just don’t understand. Why can’t you use your name when you comment? This is basic courtesy and respect. If i don’t have your respect, why should i give you mine.

  • Your comments is full of self promotion

I understand you are trying to attract some traffic to your site but it surely hurts to do it in a illegal way. What’s so hard of reading a post and then comment about it?

  • You are not making it like a conversation

You are talking to yourself. I enjoy a conversation. Please let me know you are talking to me.

Just four simple criteria you need to fulfill here, nothing more nothing less. I can relate not everyone can always leave a valuable comment but at least show me you have fulfilled the above. I believe you won’t get your comments deleted even on other blogs.

So far Akismet and G.A.S.P plugin have done a great job in moderate all the spam comments but still there are some which looks legal slip out to the blog. I have to say you can’t escape from me as i will not hesitate to delete any comments which aim at polluting this blog.

In a competitive blogosphere as now, the days are gone when giving comments in each and every blog you read and hope for the best, it’s essential for you to build a relationship with the blogger that you are visiting.

I hope by making some clarification, you will understand why i need to delete your comments sometimes. Most of the commenters here are trying to join in the conversation and i really appreciate and thank you for that.

Lets hear what you have to say regarding the correct way to comment. Feel free to add in your thoughts!

Your Kindness to Share Means a Lot to Me

I appreciate your kindness if you can share this post making use of the share buttons on top, below or at the side. Alternatively, any retweeting of the post is helpful to my blog growth. Thank you very much for doing so. I look forward to see you soon.

Cheers.

The most important thing is to contribute to the conversation. Simply writing “nice post” will get you spammed. Blog comments can get you links, but it’s really about more than that. It’s about establishing a presence and relationships with bloggers and other blog readers in the industry.

I must agree with Nick. Relationships are what really important in commenting.

I’m personally sick of all this comment spam that is going on, Lye. Hopefully, some of comments will read your post and get wiser, and we will have some more decent comments on our blogs.

Great point, building a relationship is really what commenting is all about. We comment not just for few visitors back to our blog.

      Thanks for the comments.

Those are normal rules everyone should follow, i mean, how can you make a comment if you haven’t even read the man’s post?!
2-3 lines comments are, unfortunately unavoidable sometimes because you can actually sometimes make your point in just 20 words, writing more would be useless. But this is just on exceptional cases and on replies.
I won’t even comment on the real name one.

      Hi Martin,

Because it’s normal rules and yet people could not follow. I really don’t understand. How effective can they draw traffic back to their site if they keep on spamming?

      Thanks for adding your thoughts.

They probably draw the same “quality” traffic as they provide themselves. Spammers.

How many thank you can one take? It’s not that hard to read a post and express a genuine opinion. Is it?

Hm…I’m surprised to see that some still think that a “thank you” and “keep up the good work” will do wonders for their site.

From my point of view these are the solid examples to save your important time, many time it happened due to some reason your comment goes to spam box but i think after follows these some simple things we could reduce this.

I totally agree with your points. I get a lot of spam comments too. I really don’t understand, is it that hard for them to read your article and make a decent comment that contributes to the conversation? I think everyone can say their opinion on something, it’s not that hard. But I guess they just use some software that auto posts comments.

Maybe you are right, it could be due to some automated software. All these people are simply hoping for the best and they are visitors who we do not want in our blog.

      Thanks for the comments.

    Lye,

Great topic. Commenting happens to be one of the best ways to drive traffic. But it can be abused.

I would even add one that is -often- true. Get a Gravatar.

Now, having no gravatar does not mean you ARE a spamer, but most spammers do not have gravatar’s.

It is just one extra step to separate yourself from the teeming masses of spammers.

Plus people sometimes get caught as “spam” by askimet even if they are not. I get about 1000 “spam” messages a day. I do not have time to look through them all. But 3 times a day (most days) I go through the spam folders at warp speed. I ONLY pause to read the message if it has a gravatar.

Just a little hint that those without gravatars might think about. ESPECIALLY if they are not spammers.

    Hey Lye,
I approved a comment by someone that uses a real name but they have a site that promotes coupon codes.

What do you think about commenters who don’t have a blog but rather a site that promotes coupons?

One of these guys was going through my site commenting on random posts with one liners. Nice post and so on. I soon began deleting them.

As long as the comment is not spam, i have nothing against people who don’t have a blog but with a coupon promotion site.

I don’t think we can do much about that except taking our time to delete the comments.

      Thanks for the comments, Justin.

Ah spam, life would be so much better without it don’t you agree?

I believe we would all prefer the people who visit our blogs to participate in the conversation and give their honest opinion from what they read. Some people have a hard time speaking what’s on their mind so I can’t fault them for that. As long as they are trying and their comments seem somewhat on topic, I’ll let them slide.

It’s the ones that are just going for the backlinks and their comments make no sense are the ones that are outta here. I use to feel bad about it but no more.

Now those who visit your blog will know why they’ve never made it through. Bravo Lye!

Well spam is not going away any time soon. If anything we will likely see more of it as software and technology get more complex.

I know some people have different criteria for what is spam and what is not. Some things end up spam moderation and sometimes they are not in my opinion. Most times they are though. I would rather just delete something than to mark it as spam, and let the commenter try again somewhere else.

Nothing wrong with a little disagreement as long as it don’t get out of hand or cussing, swearing and name calling. Haven’t had a problem with that yet, but I have seen it elsewhere.

I have no problem at my readers disagreeing with me. In fact i encourage that as i love to hear different opinions. For me, comments consider as spam is what they couldn’t fulfill the four criteria that i need. Else, it should be approved here.

    Hi Lye,
You know, I read a post recently about genuine comments being mistakenly marked as spam by Akismet.
It’s a reminder that however Akismet is a great tool, it’s not perfect and that bloggers should also check their spam folders for these genuine comments because once marked as spam, these bloggers may get blocked on other sites as well.
I agree with Steve that commenters should take extra steps like having a gravatar to at least safeguard ourselves against something like this.

I believe that it is good manners to read a post before commenting because only by doing this will you be able to contribute to the post. I do not think it is polite to only focus on marketing yourself on another persons blog without contributing anything.
