Should You Publish Full Or Partial Feeds?

RSS Feeds

Is there a definite answer for this? No, it all depends on what you want for your blog. There are always two sides on a coin and every debate has its own supporters. We are tied to our opinion and we can’t force the other side to agree with us.

Bloggers have their own set of reasons for publishing full or partial feeds. Let’s have a breakdown of the advantages on full and partial feeds.

Advantages of Full Feeds

  • Saves your readers time

It is easier for your reader to access your content as all the content is shown under one page, he/she does not have to click an additional link to visit the source site.

  • Convenience for people who read feeds through mobile

Yes the percentage of people reading blogs and feeds using smartphones is on a rise. Having a full feed make it a convenience for people who read your content through this media. People don’t have to click on the link and wait for the full page to be loaded while they will have already finished reading if the post is in full feeds.

  • You won’t drive subscribers away

Partial feeds may have the tendency to drive subscribers away as their purpose of subscribing is to access the full content without any hassle.

  • Your subscribers can still access your content if your site crashes

In rare cases, your subscribers can still access to your quality content if your blog/site crashes or being hacked. This is especially important if your readers look to your blog for inspiration.

  • No worry about commenting in post

You don’t have to worry about comments. If your post is thought provoking, people will still come to your site to read comments by other readers or leave a comment.

Advantages of Partial Feeds

  • Increase of pageviews

Since your readers have to visit your blog for a full glimpse of your post, this resulted in increase of pageviews.

  • No worry about stolen content

Yes, there are people doing that.Full feed has the risk of your content being stolen and published in scrapper sites.

  • Advertising concern

Some bloggers have to take the pageviews into consideration as they are selling advertising ads in their blog. A higher pageview is essential is better when advertiser look at their blog to purchase ads space.

  • Excerpt Preview

Full feeds are overwhelming. People get to decide whether they want to read the full post by reading a small excerpt. It saves your reader the pain of reading some long post which ultimately maybe of no interest to him/her.

What’s my take?

As i mentioned, there is no right or wrong answer in this case. You have to decide what you want and what your readers want. I publish full feeds simply because i love to see my readers accessing the content anytime they want at their convenience.

Of course i love to see people visiting my blog. However, i think back ultimately it’s my content which is the deciding factor that makes people to click the link to my blog. Whether full or partial feeds has nothing to do with this.

As a subscriber of many blogs, i like to see full feeds coming to my Google reader. I read most of the blogs through mobile and clicking another link to read the complete post is a big hassle for me.

That to say, i will not unsubscribe if you are using partial feeds. It’s not a criteria for me to unsubscribe, your content is.

I have shared my take on this, what’s your take?

Full or Partial Feeds

There must be a reason for you to use either one. It could be you totally have no concern whether full or partial feeds is going to have any effect on you.

If you are undecided, here is a list of questions to help you make up your mind.

  1. Do you see a drop in subscribers when you use partial feeds?
  2. Do you see any difference in pageview when you use full or partial feeds?
  3. Is selling ads space a concern to you?
  4. Is Feedburner a huge traffic source for you?
  5. Has your content being stolen and published in Scrapper sites?
  6. Do your readers access your content mostly through mobile?
  7. What is your readers habit of reading feeds?
  8. Is saving your readers time a big deciding factor for you?
  9. What does your reader want?
  10. Which of the above is most important to you?

Hopefully answering of the questions above can help you easily to decide whether you want to go for full or partial feeds.

Conclusion

Alternatively you can try out both and decide which works best for you. You should not focus too much on this as your blog growth relies on your quality content which is the antidote to solve people’s problems. Most importantly, you need to be happy with your choice and so are your readers.

I’m a practical person and i like to read them in full. Still, when they’re my feeds… i mostly make them partial feeds for the excerpt preview because this is what i think people want most.
I don’t like it when i see feeds like this, but i keep saying to myself i’m special :)

      Hi Antonia,

You are really special with two different ways of receiving and publishing. At the end of the day, if both you and your readers are happy, i don’t see any problem at all.

      Thanks for commenting.

    Hi Lye

what a truly informative post. This is the first one I’ve seen discussing this topic.

I just presume mine are full feeds. A techie set mine up as I am such a technophobe LOL And I’ve not had any feedback, so presume my readers are happy with the way things are.

Thanks for sharing this with us Lye. Appreciated.

      Hi Pat,

Guess your loyal reader will not mind as they will still be reading your post for sure. When people subscribe to your feeds, it shows they are truly interested in all things lavender. I don’t think they would mind full or partial feeds.

      Thanks for dropping by.

I like them both for the reasons you mentioned here. Partial and full feeds have their advantages to both blogger and reader. I do like the idea of everyone being able to read the post in full without having to jump somewhere else, though. You’ve, once again, made me think. :)

      Hi Maria,

Think different people have different preference. We just need to align the preference between us and our readers. Anyway, we are unable to please everyone.

      Thanks for the comments.

I like partial feeds. Why? Because there are a bunch of losers out there who can and will copy your posts completely and republish them as if they wrote by themselves. Its bad enough with partial feeds, with a full feed its almost like having a replica of your own blog out there.

      Hi Amanda,

Seems like you have some experience on that. Definitely there are some black sheep out there. We just have to choose what is best for us.

      Thanks for adding your view.

I prefer partial feeds, but not because I worry about content theft. I just like feeds that give a teaser of an article so I can decide whether I want to read the entire piece. Writing excerpts/synopses that entice a click-thru — now there’s a real skill!

It all depends on what the blogger wants. If you want more visitors to your site then the partial feed should do. If you are just out to give information then the full feed will ensure that your readers get the information they require without having to visit your site.
