3 Simple Guidelines to Follow When Accepting Guest Post

Accepting Guest Post Guidelines

This is a guest post by Tushar Agarwal. Should you wish to write for this blog, check out the guest post guidelines.

In the present scenario in blogosphere, guest posts have become a very prominent method to build traffic, backlinks, relations and exposure. And to be very fair, it is one of the easiest methods that will surely get results. There are bloggers who have made authority in their niche by just writing guest posts religiously. I, sometimes, judge many blogs on the basis of the number of guest posts they published. And both the bloggers and writers are in favor of guest posts because they are beneficial for both of them.

As a blogger, we are happy if we keep getting guest posts. That gives us extra time to write our own stuff and do other blog related things. But does that mean that we should accept ANY guest post without running a quality check?

Most of us adopt the following methodology while reviewing guest posts-

  • See a pending guest post.
  • Check the typos and grammatical errors.
  • Check the post length.
  • PUBLISH IT.

Yes, that is it. We do not even care to check what is written in there because we are happy as other writers are considering us good enough blog to publish their post. In the role of blog admin, you need to define some strict guidelines for yourself before you publish a guest post.

1. It should go with your niche - This is very obvious and needless to say but still, we miss or I should say, ignore it. I agree that most of the blogs here are in ‘blogging’ niche but there are many sub-niches. Some writes to talk about technology in blogging, some internet marketing and other stuff. You have defined a niche for yourself and make sure the guest post is relevant. Minor deviations so sometimes but they should be avoided at maximum occasions. You cannot think of making your niche as movies and then write about US-Russia relations.

2. You are able to understand what the writer is saying - Once you have read the post; you should be clear what the writers wanted to write and convey. There should be no ambiguity in your mind and you need to make sure that anyone who will read this will be able to make out the conclusion. It is because until you don’t get what is written there, you cannot expect the other readers to understand it. Hence, make yourself sure first and others later.

3. Too many errors spoil the post - While reviewing, you have to be stern about the rules to publish it. Too many errors will surely ruin the post and it is become a turn off for you to if you keep correcting errors. Make clear that the grammatical errors need to be rectified by the writer itself.

Conclusion

I am not getting rude nor there is any offense intended but there is a proverb- “You Scratch My Back, I’ll Scratch Yours”. Guest posts are a perfect example of it. While we are getting an extra post for our blog without writing it from the guest writer, he also receives backlinks and good amount of traffic from us. That make it a perfect deal and when a blogger does not show any laxity on his part while publishing the guest post, it is very fair if he expects the same from the guest writer.

Every blogger has their own guidelines when accepting guest post. What else do you look for when reviewing a guest post? I like to know what you have to say.

Right points, You can’t ignore your niche while accepting any guest post, plus you won’t like to accept a post which you can’t understand… then how would you expect your readers to understand it.

Great post here! Lots of great tips and insights. It’s definitely important to proof read the guest post to make sure it has no spelling errors or grammar errors as well and make sure that people will understand it. Thanks for sharing this post! I’m pretty strict on the type of sites that I link to in guest posts. If somebody submits a great guest post, but it links to a crap site, like a made-for-adsense site, then I won’t publish it. I don’t want to promote that kind of stuff to my readers.

I am not so strict. If the comment is relevant I always accept it:) Of course I always check for errors, because I find it unprofessional.

Some great points here Tushar and what you said about guest posts is true. And you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours – definitely the truth and you are not being rude at all (O:

What I would like to add is accept honest views that comes from the experience of the guest blogger himself/herself. What I usually see is a lot is rewritten contents from somebody’s blog. Even if you get inspired by someone’s post at least add your own story and twist. That makes it worth publishing…

    What do you think?

    That’s correct Tushar!

Although guest blogging is great, it’s best to keep the readers in mind when accepting guest posts. Because in the end, it’s our readers and visitors that build up our blogs. And disappointing them sounds like a bad deal. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

What to do if you have accepted too many guest posts? Say for example 10 guest post. Will you schedule them or post them all at once? I can’t seem to figure out how to schedule them.

      Hi Jeff,

Just to give my two cents. It depends on your niche and the style your blog is in. If you have a multi-author blog, it’s fine to post them one by one because your readers have got used to the style.

For me, i will definitely schedule it as i like to have my own post stuff in between the guest post. This is a single author blog, i will lose some readers if i keep publishing guest post. What my readers like is to connect with me.

You have to look at your own blog and judge your own.

Setting rules and guidelines (high basis) is the answer when you’re about to approve or ignore a post. Except for the niche, the CONTENT itself is the most important thing. Errors? I guess, it’s the guest writer’s responsibility to ensure that he’s article is perfect before submitting to the host.

I don’t think that you sound rude, all the things you have written above are completely true. I noticed by myself that there are some not too qualitative guest posts on different blogs, even with grammatical mistakes, about which you told. And I can’t understand this. I think that people who decided to write any article should recheck in several times. If not, then I can say that they are not responsible at all

Thanks for sharing those wonderful tips. I don’t think we should be very vigilant of not accepting guest posts or comments with so much grammatical errors. Some visitors of the site are from other countries and it is understandable that they don’t know much of the universal language.

It’s the host responsibility to check the guest poster’s article before publishing it to his blog because if not, what he thinks that can benefit him could make him worst.

Thumbs up for this post! Quite timely topic.

If you receive a lot guest posts, just read which do you think is good enough to be posted on your blog. The content of the post is still the most important factor to consider.

Accepting guest posts can be a very challenging task for many bloggers. I agree with you that people should be very careful about the posts they accept because some may end up ruining your reputation other than improving it.

Well the guest blogging is on a peak, so due to this there are the persons who just for the sake of posting, create the crappy content which is of no useful at all. So every blog admin must go through the content and should check it properly and then only it should be published. Because in the end, quality guest blogging will give the better results.

    Hi Tushar,

You make some very good points here.

I accept guest posts and, apart from checking spelling and grammar and that the topic fits with my blog, I expect the guest blogger to spend a little time promoting the post (tweeting it for example) and also to check in from time to time so that they can answers comments.

I normally write a short introduction before the guest post and then include another short paragraph at the end inviting comment.

Done well, guest blogging is a win-win for the poster and the blog owner.
