The Harsh Truth Of Blogging About Blogging

Harsh Truth

Blogging about blogging is a saturated niche to be in. You need to be very talented, creative, hardworking, sociable and persistent to see success in blogging niche. It’s extremely hard to stand out from such a crowded blogosphere.

Reasons why bloggers like to blog about blogging

  • Yes, it is a saturated niche but it is popular as well
  • You can’t think of other niche
  • You think it’s easier to make money with blogging niche
  • There are so many blogs talking about blogging, you won’t be lacking of post inspiration and ideas
  • Blogging niche is your passion

I can think of hundred reasons but just one is enough for you to start a blogging blog. Most of the bloggers have one aim in mind when they start a blog. That is to earn your living through your blog and quit your full time job once and for all. Living a comfortable internet lifestyle, who wouldn’t want that?

Wait, it’s not that simple

We are exposed to too much hype about how easy or how simple to earn money from the internet. Professional and responsible bloggers will not tell you that. They will tell you it requires a lot of time, patience, knowledge and work to earn a constant income.

There are numerous way to make money online. Blogging is just one of them. NEVER have the mentality of thinking you just build a blog start earning money while you are sleeping. In fact it’s a difficult way to earn money, your full time job is easier.

The Harsh Truth of blogging about blogging

Let me tell you one harsh truth, majority of the full time bloggers who you know didn’t start a blog to blog about blogging. Most of them have another niche blog which they test out different strategies to see which works or which don’t. Two perfect examples are Darren Rowse and Pat Flynn.

Darren Rowse has Digital Photography School and Pat Flynn has Green LEED Exam Academy. Both bloggers use these blogs as a platform to share with their visitors case studies and experience in their respective blogging blogs.

If you jump right into a blogging niche without any blogging experience, most likely you will struggle to attract a huge readership. Recent bloggers such as Tristan Higbee and Blog Tyrant, both bloggers had lots of blogging experience beforehand and no doubt they are able to make an impact fast.

Blogging knowledge is not built into you. You wouldn’t have master the secrets if you don’t have a blog to test out all the strategies. If you use a blogging niche as a platform to gain your experience, i wouldn’t say you won’t find success in it but it can take a long time before you can see it.

How long does it takes? Nobody would know, it depends on how dedicated are you.

Other harsh truths are:

  • You may not earn a penny even if you work for years
  • There are better ways to earn money
  • It’s hard to stand out in a saturated niche
  • Can you do better than Darren Rowse

These are the harsh truths that will bring you down. Reasons that bloggers quit their blog within months or years.

Can i still blog about blogging?

Why not? There are post that tell you to stop blogging about blogging. This is an advise or suggestion, it’s for your consideration. Who can stop you from doing something but yourself. If your goals of starting a blogging niche is:

  • Make money or earn fast cash

You just have to be prepare to:

  • Fail
  • Commit a lot of time
  • Be very patient
  • Be hardworking

Can you commit to the above? If you can’t, think twice before you start a blog on blogging niche.

On the other hand, there is always good reasons to enjoy your blogging niche if:

  • Money is definitely not your goal
  • Just want to enjoy yourself in the blogosphere
  • A platform to learn about blogging
  • Blogging niche is your passion

You don’t have to think twice, pay your domains, web hosting, find a theme and there you go.

No goals and you probably find it easier

It’s important to have goals. How many time have you heard that? Having a goal keep you motivated, dedicated and committed to ensure your blog is successful. You have to deal with disappointment and move on when you are unable to reach your goals.

I am opposite. I don’t like to set goals. No goals help me to work on my own pace and i enjoy the pace with no pressure. I have no intention to make it big online. My full time job is not that bad. Blogging is a passionate hobby of mine and that’s the reason why i can keep my passion alive always.

Unless you really hate your job, you are very determined to succeed online. You need to make a plan and plan your strategies. Target your goals and move towards that direction.

Conclusion

This post has no motive or purpose to discourage you if you are in the blogging niche. In fact i hope you are more determined to find your way through in such a difficult niche.

My golden words in blogging is always prepare yourself, enjoy yourself and believe yourself during your blogging time.

Here’s to your blogging success.

what a great post i really relate to “I am opposite. I don’t like to set goals. No goals help me to work on my own pace and i enjoy the pace with no pressure. I have no intention to make it big online.” I just love to write if i set myself goals i become consumed with a deadline and my creativity falls by the wayside. Hi Lye,

Well one things for sure, blogging with the intention to make income is a hard and long process! Doable, but you definitely have to have a game plan.

I’ve made some money blogging through acquired services, but not nearly enough to call it a full time (or even part time ;-) ) income.

However as you said, it may take years to get to that point, but if you hang in there, continue to do it because you love it and just let the process flow, then your chances of success are that much higher.

Thanks for the great post… telling it like it is, is the only way to go. :-)

      Hi Michele.

You have nailed it with this. “If you hang in there, continue to do it because you love it and just let the process flow”

That’s very important as we tend to quit easily if we find it a chore.

      Thanks for the comments.

Hi Lye great post. I’ve been talking with people recently about the number of people that will blog about a certain topic, and then use the stats from the one blog they have to show how “you too can make it online” or whatever. Frankly I don’t think that holds water at all, at least not for me.

The biggest point here is that all the people you mentioned have blogs outside of the “blogging” niche, and are using those blogs to actually make money. Then they talk about it on their “blog about blogging blog (*breath*) where everyone lands. This gives many people a false sense of how things really work out there.

I’m glad to see that you know what’s going on. A keen individual you are sir. Keep talking about it.

Thanks for taking the time to comment Robert.

You make some very good points. First of all making money blogging is not something that is “simple” particularly in the “blogging about blogging” niche which is crowded with some really saavy people who know there stuff.

I also agree having another blog/ source of online income is very important because it gives you depth to speak from.

(I still make about 95% of my money from my blog/list/affilate marketing outside of SSS… Actually make that more 98-99%)

The upswing is that when people do reach the “pinnacle” it is a very financially rewarding. As you can see where darren rowse spoke about his million dollar product launch recently….

Of course getting there…now that is a challenge

    HI Lye,

I like your point that you should first earn your knowledge and skills with different niche before entering in blogging niche as in the case of Darren Rowse and Pat Flynn.

And if you want to be a successful blogger in blogging niche then forget about earning money listen what top bloggers are saying use your brain and do something additional and exceptional.

Blogging with the intention to make an income can indeed be very hard but as long as you hang in there and keep on promoting and posting on your blog on a consistent basis you can drive more and more traffic to your blog which will subsequently increase your page rank and gain you a good income. However, bear one thing in mind that it may take you quite a few months or even years to get settled in the ‘ earn income via blogging’ market. It took me 2 years myself to get settled but now by the grace of God my blog does very well. Consider dropping by my blog sometime and oh yeah I love blue and so have changed my blog theme to blue just recently :P Take Care :)

    Hi Lye,

Blogging about blogging is not easy especially today’s time as there are many genius available. Why would one read your blog rather than of an expert blogger.

First of all you have to prepare yourself for failure that’s how you learn can learn and improve. Second thing you can’t fix the deadline to become a successful blogger about blogging as it may take few months or few years as well. So patience will be the key here.

We need to know what to expect when we venture into blogging. I still believe the most important mindset is to throw earn money aside.

Be prepare for failure is also important as nobody know when success will come.

      Thanks for the added point.

First time here Lye, by way of Marcus’ blog and your CommentLuv headline, had to add that little shoutout.

As you say there are a ton of more experienced, better prepared, well connected blogging experts out there. It’s not a niche I’d want to tackle.

I joke about this all the time, that for my industry specific, business blog.. when I do a “blogging about blogging for the sake of blogging” post, it’s just filler. But then it hits me, maybe I’ve learned something along the way, maybe I can explain this WP plugin or that content strategy in a way that readers can relate to, maybe my readers will appreciate my take. When I can offer something of value about blogging, well that’s the goal. FWIW.

I really thought this post hit all the great points about blogging about blogging, Lye.

It is such a popular topic that many enjoy, including yours truly. But the over-saturation of the niche makes it somewhat redundant in many ways, as you see the same post topics from one blog to another. You can only spin the same topic so many ways. :-)

Having said that, I do understand why many remain in the niche. I blogged about the topic as well for about a year, but decided to move on for the reasons I’ve stated above.

I certainly applaud those who continue to toil within the blogging about blogging niche, but think it will continue to become increasingly difficult to gain separation as more and more bloggers enter the pool.

    Thanks for the post, Lye.

    Hi Lye

This is a great post that covers salient points and keeps it real. So many people talk about making money blogging but as you point out, they have a blog but their money is made elsewhere!

Have thought that for ages. Sadly, it gives newbies false expectations when beginning their blogging journey. And popular blogs doesn’t necessarily mean the blog owner is earning an income either ;-)

My blog is a platform for my business. I will eventually have my ebook up on it, but my other biz ventures that I will be doing will be how I hopefully will monetise.

Not being in the blogging on blogging niche, I don’t have so much competition. But then not as many searches for my small niche either.

Enjoy blogging about the lovely lavender so will continue to publish posts whilst working on other projects.

A small niche may see less searches but definitely the competition will be less as well.

It’s a good platform for you to explore more opportunities. Who knows, a company selling lavender related products may ask you to write a review or even advertise in your blog. There is certainly no limits.

I can not agree more with you. I also have niche sites and that is how I learned so much about all this before I started my “blog about blogging”.

My niche sites make more money than I think my blog could ever make. So I would recommend that unless you are really experienced in online business, you should choose a niche and write a blog about it. At least you will make some money :)

For. e.g. blogging about SEO and internet marketing tools are also saturated niches, but this doesn’t stop a new blogger to come and write his experience. I find this a good thing, because at one point, one advice can change the way I blog. Of course I don’t read everything, but if you think you are good at SEO than write about it! Chances are that other will think the same!

This applies to other subjects as well. Be confident and don;t be discouraged by the competition. Competition just makes us better!
