As a young boy my mother was always telling me: ‘Fools rush in where angels tread.”
I didn’t have a clue what she meant at the time but as I grew older it started to make sense: don’t rush anything, take your time, learn, interact, try before doing.
Very wise words. I don’t follow them, though. I’m rebellious – always have been. I hate following rules and refuse to do what everyone else is doing. It’s got me into a bit of trouble and I’ve upset a few apples carts but “greatness lives on the edge of destruction”.
I started my blog to help people write better, blog better, to build community, and to challenge the stats quo.
I’ve learned in blogging some rules you need to follow in order to compete and succeed: If you are just starting out or thinking of starting a blog I suggest the following:
- Twitter: begin interacting with and building relationships with people in your niche.
- Facebook: tell your friends you’re starting a blog and you would like their support.
- Comment on blogs and interact with and build relationships with bloggers.
- Have your design/logo in place and ready.
- Invest in blogging/mastermind courses.
- Start commenting on blogs in your niche and elsewhere.
- Have your own e-book written and ready to go.
- Have a credible opt-in service in place.
- Subscribe to newsletters in your niche.
- Invest time in keyword research, SEO, anything that will help you get noticed quicker.
- Write a month’s post in advance.
I am doing all of the above and my e-book is nearly complete. I am closer to choosing a design and logo. Slowly, slowly I’m starting to see results. If I had followed these rules from the beginning I have no doubts my readership after one month would be much bigger and stats much higher.
Share your thoughts
Is the above list worth doing before starting a blog? What else should one do before starting a blog? What things did you do before starting out on your blogging journey? Why did you start blogging or why are you thinking of starting a blog?

Hi Michael,
First of all thanks for the guest post. Your points really sums it all. As a blogger, we need to do everything we could to maintain the blog. Its not as simple as ABC and this post really points them out. Good job there bro.

So true. Before starting with my present blog, I didn’t know about so many things, and as a result I have lost quite a good amount of traffic. My first month’s stats were horrible. I learnt all these from other bloggers after starting with my blog. But I am still not doing some of the things that you have mentioned.

Hi Oni
Exactly. Writing and scheduling posts one month in advance has helped me because at the moment I still have a 9-5 job that I must to commit to. Even if I wasn’t working offline I would still schedule in advance to allow more time for marketing and maintaining my blog

Really great post Michael,
You are absolutely right. It is always good to interact and build a name before starting a blog.
One mistake I commit is that I don’t write my posts ahead (and I will work on getting this done).
Thanks a lot for the great post,

Hi Michael,
You provide a great summation here for a newbie blogger.
I would add not to wait until each factor is in place before starting a blog. No matter how prepared you are some mistakes are inevitable, and trying to minimize all mistakes tends to make you a gun shy blogger who is afraid to fail.
Prepare as much as possible but when you are ready to begin blogging jump in!
Thanks for sharing your insight

That’s a good point you make. And as you say just make sure you have some of these points in place and you can starting blogging with confidence; trying to minimize mistakes can, indeed, make you a gun shy blogger. A successful blogger is not afraid to fail and learn from those failures.
Great response. Thank you.

I got ideas for a month’s post, but writing them before a month is quite hard for me. Other than that, I am following all the points listed here. Thanks for this post, Micheal.

great suggestions!
and if i may add
BE CLEAR ON YOUR GOAL
are you blogging for money?
are you blogging to journal?
are you blogging to simply appreciate?
BE WHO YOU ARE
who’s voice is talking?
do you appreciate what you are saying?
BE GRATEFUL
you want readers?
how come you don’t know how to say thank you?
how come you can’t extend the same courtesy?
you are not after the statistics?
turn the comment portion off please.
by the way, how many percent of readers you might have gained

or not lost had you practiced those suggestions from the start?
thanks!

Hey Michael,
Your suggestions holds 101% practical truth. I regularly visit my favorite blogs so I can understand what draws readers to a blog and what can keep the readers away. New bloggers should read such important posts to avoid committing mistakes.
