Is this a question you ask yourself before you write a post? I have heard people asking this and i don’t understand why you should limit the length of your post. The post length should not be in your consideration when you are drafting your post.
The best blogging rule you need to know is “there are none”. People can tell you, you need to write a long post consist of thousand words or you should write a shorter post maybe 500-1000 words. The fact is “It does not matter”. Most importantly:
Are you getting your message across?
You can be as long winded as anyone could be writing a long post or you can write like Seth Godin who is famous for his short post. The questions is; are you packing enough details to get your message across to your readers?
You need to write your post with purpose. What are you trying to achieve with your post? What do you want your readers to do after reading your post? These are the things that matter, not the length of a post.
Is your writing flow limited by the post length?
Post length limits your creativity and your writing flow. If you pre-set a target post length, it gives you additional pressure to meet it. In fact why should you set a target of how many words you are going to write. Let your writing flow naturally.
Write it with your heart, listen to it, write what you have to say. Focus on the message you are getting across.
Long doesn’t mean it’s good
I am sure you have read post written by Glen Allsop, they are long and they are good. This also gives people a misconception you need to write superb long post. Glen’s post is well-like by thousand of his readers because he pack them with details and information. You just can’t stop reading them.
When you have plan to write a lengthy post with few thousand words, make sure you do your research and get your facts right. It’s also advisable to include formatting and images in your post in order not to bore your readers.
What should be your ideal post length?
There is no definite answer on this. Sometimes it becomes a habit when you write naturally. Most of my post hover around 700-1000 words and this is the post length i am comfortable with. Occasionally i have a few post which is shorter but it has no effects on the number of comments.
One of the reason i find it pretty hard to absorb when i am reading a long post and i tends to scan through unless i know the blogger pretty well. This mindset is built in me and i somehow always come out a post which is less than a thousand words.
Conclusion
Stop caring about your post length from now. Throw this question into the mist. Write your post based on the criteria mentioned above. Write for your readers and nothing else but your readers.

Hi Sandy,
Really, it depends on our own judgement even if somebody tells you that you need to do this or that. No rules need to be strictly follow.

The lenght was important for SEO once, but I think the search engines are moving towards more machine reading. This means that its more important to have a popular post that people reads, than a perfect number of words, also for the SEs..

Hi Bjorn,
Some may argue that longer post is better for SEO. I never taken that into consideration when i draft my post. Just focus on writing for the readers.

I totally agree with this but will say a longer post does have more in it so natually could rank for more terms in a ranking without optimizing/trying to sense.

i will differ with you Lye. Whatever the message is and how good and apt it is, if you are writing a short article, chances are you are wasting it.
I have personally observed that people to tend to give low rating to blogs that have short posts if they have good content. a 500+ word post is the way to go or atleast 450+ but not less in any way

Hi Tushar,
Great to hear you have different opinion. 450-500 words is the average word for a post. Anything less than that will have a hard time attracting readers or SEO but i don’t believe it will have a low rating. Ultimately we need to look at the content.
Thanks for sharing your views.
Lye
I like that Lye. Never confine your creative with length of post. Say what you want in how ever long is required and people will know your true intention and message.
Personally for me, writing post is quite easy. The reason is because I structure my article quite well before I start. Once I have planned the big ideas, I just let my writing and thoughts flow.
I think people are far to concern with their SEO which can affect the length of each post.

Looking at the frequency you roll out your post, i can tell writing a post is never a problem for you. Probably you can tell us how you get your ideas for the topics you talked about, probably another guest post?

Nice argument Lye
I love “to the point” blog posts as they tell me exactly what I want to know in a short amount of time. Long posts, unless they’re exceptional in their content, will be a turn off for any visitor. And it’s even worse when they reach the end of the long road without any gain lol!

Hi Duy,
Same as here. Unless it’s step by step post, i don’t really have the patience to finish a post full of words. I prefer short and concise post.
Thanks for the comments.
Lye
It depends on the article, but I have read a post that was only 200-300 words that was better than a similar one of 1000 words. Of course there are short posts that you wonder what the point of it was because there really isn’t much to it. There is nothing wrong with a longer 1000+ word article, but sometimes when it is longer people give up about halfway through and scroll to and read the last paragraph. Personally I don’t think it matters either, and every topic is different.

I do agree that longer posts are not necessarily better ones. Basically, I think you should just have a very clear idea of what you want to communicate, then say it in the most succinct way possible. If you are padding it out then you’re just wasting readers’ time.
That said, as long as you’re not padding, I do think that longer posts are a bit better generally for SEO. This is due to a couple of factors, one of them being that other bloggers seem to be a bit more likely to link to more comprehensive posts.

Hi Matt,
Longer post also need more planning and structuring. You surely do not want to bore the readers and they quit reading half way through. A lot of information and details to be pack inside.

Hi,
I think comment length does matter if you are posting to achieve SEO rankings. Google is valuing content more than ever and many gurus are saying post need to be 1000 words. Of course your content has to be relevant or you are just wasting your time.
Thanks,
Jim

I have had better results with my really long and detailed posts though.

Awesome thoughts Lye!
There are no strict rules regarding blogging. We are the bloggers and individually we make our own rules. Thus there is no disagreement here – short or long post it doesn’t matter until you get the message right.
Keep it up brother…

I keep away from long posts without breaks, first glance at the article is enough. As a regular reader of blog posts I’d opine that breaking the post into paragraphs is better on the eyes and to read as well.
Twitter: Findmyblogway
Hi Brandon,
That’s basic formatting even for a short post. Longer post require extra care as we definitely want our readers to get to the end of the post.
Thanks for the comments.

Most of my posts are only 200-500 words. Well, it depends on what topic. I care less about the post length. As long as I get the message right. When I know that I will be dealing with a lengthy post, I split them into 2 topics instead.
Twitter: Findmyblogway
Hi Samuel,
Sometimes niches have to do with the post length. That’s great to split into two parts if you understand the reading habit of your readers well.

What are you saying in your posts is partially correct, but only from a writer point of view. Is true, sky is the limit.
But from a reader’s point of view i don’t like to read 1000 words in a post, even though it might be very interesting. Better split it in 2 parts.

Hi Radu,
I can only say it depends on individual. Ultimatlt the content is the factor that decides whether people will read from start to finish.

Lye,
I agree…to a certain extent. The material should drive the post, if you topic is big the post should be too. But if they topic is a quickie, your post should follow suit.
But for VERY short posts, there is some definite ranking value in having more content. (like 300 words or less) it is hard to give any really decent explanation of your point in these micro-posts.
When you DO create long posts, it is also important to “break” it up, so that the reader is not faced with a wall of text.

Longer post need more formatting and inclusion of images can give readers a break and maintain the interest of reading. Great point Steve.

Hi Lye,

I strongly agreed that a blog’s usefulness or greatness are not on it’s number of word or shortly it length, but it is on the blog’s insides. What you really wanted to express to readers or what you wanted the readers to be informed of.

Hi Lye
There’s an old saying among copywriters regarding copy length that says …
“Copy length is like a womans skirt. It should be long enough to cover the essentials – but short enough to keep it interesting.
Although this advice is meant for copywriting but I think this is 100% true about the length of blog post also. And as you said about rules“there are none”.
So the ideal length of blog post depends on you and your readers. If you can explain your ideas in 500 words then it’s ideal and if you need 1000 words and your readers are also happy with it then it will also work.
Twitter: Findmyblogway
Hi Hamza,
I don’t remember i heard this saying but it certain reflects very well on the copy length issue. As long the message is get across to the readers and they are happy, things are done.
Thanks for taking the time to leave me a shout.

Hi,
It is not important if how many words you can write as long as you enjoyed the topic and you learn…
Meagan recently posted..Canada Hotel Finder
Actually, I don’t really bother how long a post is, so long I find it interesting. Anyway, most readers are after of posts that are informative and straight to the point. Once a reader find themselves hooked in reading the post, they wouldn’t mind if its long or short.

Yeah! Most people actually know him already and had established his reputation online. If only other bloggers have that charisma to reach out with others, I bet post wouldn’t really matter. Oh, not unless these bloggers serve for Google, for sure they are after of the long post to be loved by the latter.

Hello Lye,
Great post – I think you hit the nail on the head; there is no hard and fast rule for post length.
I tend to write somewhere between 600 – 1200 words, but that’s got a lot to do with the type of post, reviews which need to be fairly thorough. On the other hand, if it’s a short message, then it’s a short post – “this price has been cut by 50% for the next two days only” for example.
As long as you write well (and you do by the way), post length should suit your writing style and topic. No other rules or guidelines apply as far as I’m concerned.

I prefer to write short, because long writing usually consists of several topics that could be subdivided into several posts. It’s not profitable to write long but the core issue divided

When I was starting to write articles they ask me to have at least 500 words! But now, upon reading your post, as long as an article is informative and relevant, it is a good article!
That is the question which every blogger has to decide and take action, some time the comment exceeds more than 500 and its like over for the post but still they want to keep it for a good success.
