How to Find the Right Balance Between Family/Blogging

Good Balance

Are you a blogger by profession? If you are not, how do you actually balance your time between your family and blogging? When you are young, your one and only full time job is studying. Time is at your side whenever you need it. As you grow older, you will realize that time is so precious. It’s especially hard when you held several roles as a husband, father, employee and blogger. You will find it difficult to juggle between your family, work and blogging time.

If blogging is a passion to you, how many hours do you spend to maintain your blog? There is 24 hours in a day. Your full time job will probably take up 8-10 hours. Lets say your sleeping time takes another 8 hours a day, so you are left with 6-8 hours to eat, travelling, dating with your spouse and of course blogging. This is going to spread your time thin but there are certainly ways to help you find the right balance which i am going to show you below.

Recognize Your Priority

There is actually no two ways about balancing your family and blogging time. Which is the most important thing to you between family, work and blogging? You just need to recognize that. Sequence them based on the importance and allocate the ideal timing to them. Your family provides you with the motivation and encouragement to do whatever you need to do in your life. Be it your parents, spouse or your children. How important is blogging to you depends on where you place it. Is it below your family or is it above your family? It really depends on you.

Manage and schedule your time according to the importance and priority. If you think family is most important to you, your loves one will find it contradicting that you spend most of your time working and blogging. You never bother to spend time with them. That is a bad example of balancing. To strike a good balance, you need to:

Set your limit – If you promise to spend two hours blogging, never spend more than that. Explain your goals and purpose of blogging to your family members. Let them understand why you need to face that small monitor every day. You need their support and encouragement.

Spend a thought for their feelings – Though you bent on building an online business for yourself, you need to spend a thought for your family sometimes. Your spouse needs concern from you. He/She would always want to be your most priority. Your kids need your company to play with them and have fun with them too.

Get them involved – Your spouse may have no idea what blogging is. Try to get them involved. Share your achievements, ups and downs with them. Your family just wants to do something together with you. By getting them involved, you can foster the bond even when you blog. Just imagine when my name pop out at Onibalusi’s Young Entrepreneur Blog, I told my wife about it and she just keep laughing finding it amazing to see my name and photo online.

Take a break if you can – Sometimes you just need to take a break and bring your family out for a movie or a dinner. This is also to prevent you from getting burned out from blogging. When did you take a break from blogging the last time? Maybe it’s time to do that today.

Wrap Up

To achieve your blog success requires you to spend a lot of your personal and family time. How you keep a balance between your family and blogging is a big challenge to your time management. If you can do it well, not only you will have a thriving blog but also an happy marriage life with your loves one behind you.

    Hi Lye
This is an important subject and one to think about when commencing blogging. As with starting a new business or any new venture; time spent may be more than when it is established.

That’s why if you have family it is important to have their support and understanding. Life balance is also important and for each of us our situations are different and we need to adjust accordingly.

Another important thing to think about is our health. No good having a successful business if our health deteriorates! Thanks for sharing this with us Lye. Much appreciated.

      Hi Pat,

You are right about the health. It is the most important thing to have. Without a strong body, we are going to collapse physically and mentally if we do not take care. Great point.

      Thanks for the awesome support.

    Hi Lye,

    Great tips here.

The time limit is a biggie. Stick with it!

It’s important to set up boundaries because time limits prevent you from losing a sense of balance. For me, it’s God first, family, then business. When I screw up the order, I suffer ;)

Agreed with you Lye. I must say that when I first starting out, I’m very.. VERY obsessed with my new blog. Really! haha. I would always think that the design need improvement, i need to write more posts, always checking if there are people reading my blog.

I was too busy with it, till i neglect ppl around me, including my girlfriend. But I shared with her about my blog, my passion in blogging, and my future plans of taking this blog to. :) And i got her interest in blogging too! And hence we blogged together, and we both got a new common topic and interest to share :)

Great to share my story here with others, that’s inline with the topic of this post :) Love it!

That’s a wise move to get your girlfriend involved. i believe everyone should have a topic he/she is passionate about. Think she will get addicted once she starts blogging.

      Thanks for the comments bro.

amazing thoughts , i totally agree with that !! loved the way you talked about it and i bet this is coming from a real experience , i can feel it :) ))
Any way , balancing time is important but i just find it hard to decide how much you are going to spend in front of Pc , cause like if you are answering comments or writing some , you wont know how much you will write and that’s the problems , like if you have to write , there is always that part of you pushing you to carry on to the end , what if i don’t finish writing in 2 hours or the periode i have set? that will be really tough for me to stop , i can’t !!!!!!! but i agree , i know i have to set limits and that will absolutely right , but just hard as i said !! :)
sharing thoughts and involving the family in blogging seems to be a great strategy to get more support and i liked it :)
everything about the post was cool to me so well done , very good topic !!

      Hi Rahul,

You bet. This really comes from real experience. You know, i am being monitored whether i exceed my limit. Sometimes writing a post will take more than 2 hours, i will normally notify my wife beforehand looking for her support to entertain the little one. She has been supportive so far.

I always try to update her with my blog progress. Glad you like this post.

Thanks for the support. Talk soon.

    Hi Lye,

I think above all this is you need to have a time management and know your priorities. You only have 24 hours in a day, some thought 24 hours doesn’t compensate there 1 day work but if you have your time management I’m pretty sure that all things will fall in right places. You’ll be able to maximize your time with your family and your venture.

Great topic Lye, and that’s no Lye!

I find this to be a constant struggle, finding that balance – and the irony is that most of us are doing this for our family in the first place, so often I have to remind myself to not do it in spite of them, and to not let it get to the point where I dont even get the quality tme in the first place. (you know, the time we are working towards now!) ah the irony.

I have recently been getting my wife involved to a point, and I certainly share the ups and downs with her.
Funnily enough, I asked her to share a post of mine on Facebook, and within 5 minutes she had three colleagues asking her if I was available to help them with their SEO!

    WOW, and see!

      Hi Alex,

We are trying to indulge ourselves and our family for a comfortable internet lifestyle. We need to let our family members understand that to prevent questioning from them in a later date.

That’s good news. It shows why social media is so powerful.

    Hi Lye,

I’m Mark. Nice to meet you.

It’s interesting you asked this question. Just the other day I analyzed my schedule, like I often do, and I could find just 1.5hrs per weekday for all the things I would ever want to do in my personal life – family, friends, blogging,… Like you, I’m also a husband, father, employee, blogger, friend, son, brother,… well, the roles are many. I was going to write a post on this someday, but here I am just expressing myself since you brought up the topic.

Well, what can I say? I’m grateful that I came around and found you. Seems to add on to my list of things to be grateful about as I take on an interesting challenge this month.

    I’ll see you around…

    Cheers,

    Great tips!

I’m in a lucky position, that my wife knows about blogging in general, so this world isn’t unknown to her.

What I tend to do is that especially when I know that my wife is away, I’m spending my time online building my blog or doing internet marketing stuff. Same thing may be when there is a TV show that I’m not into. I’m working on my computer during that time instead.

It’s all about communications with your family and making common rules to follow. I think that by that way blogging and internet marketing can work out just fine.
