Interview: Patricia Millman, Founder of Best Site on All Things Lavender

Lavender

I am honor to feature Patricia Millman from LavenderUses.com in this very first interview conducted in Findmyblogway. Pat is the founder of best site on all things Lavender. She started her blog back in June 2010 and she has successfully creating a very active community in her blog. Every post she publish now can easily attract an average of 60-100 comments. Her last few post even manage 100+ comments.

She is always humble claiming she is new in blogging and has much to learn. However i believe she can teach us something and that is her networking skills. Probably she doesn’t realize by visiting and commenting in numerous blogs, she has actually creating a strategy of her own to attract traffic to her blog.

Whenever i visit a blog, she is always there with her comments left under the post. Her comments are like a mini post, adding value and providing her insight. I am really amazed by her consistent quality in her comments. This actually bring out her personality and the blog owner often have to stand up and start taking note of her.

Day by day, months by months, continuing her routine of networking with other bloggers has really make her popular in the blogosphere. Just like one of her post, Small Niche Big Ideas. Her niche may be small but her aspiration to succeed can’t be undermine.

Pat was very kind to give me the opportunity to do an interview with her. I hope you like the interview as much as i do! Please enjoy!

1. Most of my readers will be very familiar with you. For the benefit of those who don’t know you, can you please tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Patricia and I am from Perth in Western Australia.  My love for lavenders was fostered by my Grandmother. She introduced me to lavender water as she called it, when I was a young child. Then as an adult I grew lavenders; after visiting Norfolk Lavender Farm. The rest of my story is on my all things lavender blog if you would like to know more.

2. How did you get into blogging?

I was surfing the net when I kept coming acrossthe term “blog”. So I emailed an internet marketing friend and asked him what it was all about and when he told me I began to Google sites that had the word “blog” in them. I eventually did a blogging course and at the end of June 2010 I started seriously blogging myself.

3. I understand you visit a lot of blogs everyday. Can you tell us who is your favorite blogger and why? You can name more than one if you like to.

My 2 favourite bloggers are Rick LaPoint and Alex Whalley. I see them as my “unofficial” mentors. Just don’t tell them Lye will you?! Rick is a brilliant wordsmith and I love well-written posts. He is also a geek, so can answer my many questions if I want to know things about Headway theme which we both have on our respective blogs. It is also where I have published my first Guest Post. He is also an accomplished and experienced marketer. If you want to learn how to market effectively, visit Rick’s blog to learn more.

Alex Whalley is a fellow Aussie so he has a heads up straight away. He writes information packed yet humorous posts about topics I need to know heaps more about! He offers help before I even ask for it. I remember those kind gestures and really appreciate all the help he has given me. Usually I ask him heaps of questions on his blog. Gives him plenty of ideas for more posts apparently.

As an aside to this question; I have connected with many other bloggers who have helped and encouraged my blogging journey and the steep learning curve I am on continually. Ben is my go-to guy for techie problems too and I just want to let you all know I so appreciate you all.

4. I actually noticed a spike in comments during August 2010 in one of your posts. You seem to be everywhere online, commenting on numerous blogs and networking with other bloggers. Do you think this could be the reason you are seeing a spike in your blog traffic?

I hadn’t really analysed when it all began happening for me. Getting a few comments to start with was both a surprise and a relief. Meant there were a few people who were noticing my small niche blog. As I visited more blogs and went back to those blogs when new posts were published, people then came to check out my blog. The traffic is now growing steadily.  Commenting and networking has certainly helped.

5. Are there any other methods you use to generate your blog traffic?

I am active on Twitter. I get traffic from there. Although from analytics (which I hasten to add Ben did for me) I am getting more traffic organically from Google which surprised me!. Being positioned well on Google has obviously helped get my blog noticed and brought more traffic to my blog. When people are looking for specific information, having good keywords helps. So Alex tells me. Also networking with experienced bloggers has helped improve my blog’s visibility. Being mentioned in their posts has introduced me to more people. Their readers will then usually come and check out my blog. Having a unique brand and being genuine has also been important. This has got my blog noticed and talked about. As you can see, my traffic comes not from one source but many.

6. How do you actually keep track of the blogs you have visited and commented?

Many of the blogs I comment on I visit regularly, I now know what days people post, whose blogs I visit and then add new ones as I discover them. Many I visit I also follow on Twitter so see when they have published by their tweets. When you comment often, it’s easy to keep track, because I don’t see it as just visiting blogs to comment. It is more about visiting my blogging buddies and joining in the conversation. With the added bonus of learning something new while I’m there.

7. How many hours do you spend in blog commenting and visiting other blogs?

My serious marketer friends if answering for me would say….too many hours! My fellow networkers would say as long as it takes and I am enjoying myself. The honest answer is I don’t time myself but it is many hours each day. It takes longer when you read the post, read everyone else’s comments and stay to comment too! But time does fly when I’m having fun.

8. One thing I admire about you is I find you commenting on so many blogs but all your comments are insightful and well crafted. How do you manage to do that?

I just read the post and then write a comment according to what I have learnt. To me it is no different to having a one-on-one conversation. I don’t think about it before the conversation starts. But once I start writing the words flow. It helps that I love being social and interacting with other people on the net. If I have been to someone’s home and had a meal, enjoyed their company and had a nice time I will let them know. Before leaving I will thank them and tell them I appreciate whatever they have done to make my time with them enjoyable. Why wouldn’t I do the same when I visit another person’s blog? After all it is their virtual real estate. I don’t really think it is any more complicated than that!

9. What is your ultimate goal for Lavenderuses.com? For example more people to understand the use of lavender etc?

Initially my goal was to share the many uses of the lovely lavender. I am now expanding my blog to include my “Patricia’s Ponderings” on blogging. So although my blog is a platform and a tool for my fledgling business selling lavender products; I would eventually like to also be a resource for aspects of blogging I enjoy such as networking and social media. A work in progress at the moment Lye, so the goal posts keep changing. Sorry I can’t be any more specific than that.

10. Finally, what is the most important thing you have learnt since you started blogging?

That to collaborate with others is the way forward and therefore asking for help is okay.

Thanks for agreeing to do this interview.

Thanks for inviting me Lye. It has been an honour to be here on your blog, answering your well thought out questions.

I hope you have a great read. Be sure to visit Pat’s site for more uses on Lavenders or follow her on Twitter for her latest updates.

    Hi Lye and Patricia,

What a wonderful interview, isn’t it amazing how little by little we break new ground and accomplish new things we’ve never would have dreamed of 6 months ago.

If there is one way to doing commenting right, that’s your way, Patricia, read the post and write what comes up naturally from what your read and learnt. It takes time, but it’s worth it. This way it’s like you’ve earned your backlinks.

Yes, definitely, “collaborate with others is the way forward and therefore asking for help is okay.” I totally agree with that and am anticipating seeing much more collaboration among those “who’ve understood this”.

Thanks a lot for mentioning me Patricia in the interview.

      Hi Ben

Thanks for stopping by Lye’s blog and commenting. You definitely earned the mention with all that you have done on my blog behind the scenes :-)

You know I think you geeks are geniuses lol And you are right, little by little we learn new things.

I didn’t realise how much I had learnt since starting blogging seriously, till I wrote my attainable goals post for 2011.

As I looked back on 2010 only then did I realise all the things I had learnt and also achieved.

It is encouraging to know that with perseverance and hard work, there’s no reason that 2011 won’t be even better :-)

      Hi Ben,

The answers provided by Pat really explains why people are not getting results from blog commenting and networking. You can’t simply scan through the post without knowing what the blogger is trying to get across.

Thanks for dropping by to comment. Appreciate your support.

    Hi Patricia,

What was that in this interview about you being everywhere? :-)

BTW, thank you for your kind words and undying support! Besides being a great friend, you are a great “asset” to any blogger who has the good fortune to have you as a reader.

When I saw the Google headline about your new interview, I just assumed it was Business Week! But at the rate you’re moving, that will happen soon enough ;-)

Haha about business week. I am so out of my depth in so many areas. Just as well I know how to Tweet eh :-) Gets me by and did you notice I didn’t say “aweome” or use the word “passionate” anywhere lol

BTW since your last daily juice I have been seeing those words everywhere…yikes have to go RT that post again and keep spreading the blah, blah, blah.

Thanks for all your encouragement and all I’m learning from your insightful posts. Much appreciated Rick.

I have been blogging for over 1 year but didn’t realize the importance of commenting and networking until about Nov 2010. Patricia is one of the first blogs I commented on. I found her on someone else’s blog leaving a comment and the rest is history. I now comment on hundreds of different blogs and damn it if Patricia isn’t there before me every single time! Watching her grow and learn has been fun, as well as learning about lavender!

As always, thanks for your continued support and encouragement Adam. Much appreciated.

Wow, this was an excellent interview! I love learning about other bloggers. Sometimes the interview posts are my favourite!

Patricia is definitely #1 in my books for commenting everywhere and leaving the best feedback. It’s true that her comments are like mini posts themselves!

I came across Patricia’s lavender blog because I was seeing her comments everywhere I went and I was impressed with how she took good care of providing useful feedback. :)

I wish I could comment just as much as Patricia! It’s something I struggle with a little bit, finding the time and effort to read so many blogs.

    Thanks Lye & Patricia!

      Hi Elise

Thanks for your kind comments. When I started visiting other blogs and leaving comments I was acknowledging the blogger and what I had learnt from the post. Only recently I realised that’s how many bloggers arrived to come smell the lovely lavenders :-)

Was totally unaware that I was even being noticed lol Then I got people lurking on my blog and eventually coming out from behind those lavender bushes and leaving a thoughtful comment. I was very encouraged.

Now I often have a good laugh when I visit my blogging buddies’ blogs. Cos there can be a conversation going on about me commenting everywhere (Alex Whalley is one who mentions me) and it’s like I am not in the room lol I add my comment and leave ;-)

Too funny but they even mention me in their posts and generously provide me with a link! Not something I knew till Rick mentioned this fact and me in a guest post he did for commluv. That was the first time I had read anything he had written. After commenting on that post, Rick invited me to GP on his blog. Apparently he had been lurking for a bit too.

Anyway Elise you are Miss Super Geek in my book so there has to be something us non-techies do a little better than you;-)

Thanks for taking the time out of your busy day to support my GP. Really appreciate all you.

      Hi Elise,

Nice to meet you. Glad you like this interview. I am really grateful to Pat for introducing me new friends because of how she heavily promote this interview.

Seems i have another blog to visit regularly :)

Thanks for taking your time to drop by and sharing your thoughts.

What a great interview! It’s always nice to learn more of what makes a blogger tick, and the interview is only as good as the questions asked, and Lye asked all the right ones.

I’ve read interviews where the answers were very short and I couldn’t help but smile at the answers that Patricia supplied. I shouldn’t really be all that surprised though considering how everyone knows that women have the gift of the gab. ;) I must admit though that when Patricia says something there’s always a lot of value in it.

Congratulation guys on a great interview.

      Hi Sire

Thanks for dropping by. As you know we women need to do at least 20,000 words in a day. You guys usually do about 4,000. Unless you count commenting on blogs eh ;-)

I often smile when I DM my blogging buddies. Us gals will use up all the characters, the guys often are so succint with a few words lol

Glad you enjoyed the interview. When I was answering the questions I was thinking how well-thought out they were too. All kudos to Lye.

And I did try to write short answers but somehow I just kept tapping away till I finished and this was the result. Hardly succint but I hope that those who have read it have taken something of use away with them.

One has to wonder what you’re like in person. Are you as verbose or you a little quieter?

Haha Sire. You would have to ask my friends ;-) If I know people I would hopefully have a good conversation. I don’t really like just the chat, so to speak, but a good deep and meaningful then I would participate.

With those I don’t know I tend to hold back. It’s so much easier on the net. Cos I love writing; have found blogging and commenting rather lends itself to socialising.

      Hi Sire,

Nice to meet you. The questions has been pondering in my heart as i have seen how much Pat has grown with her blogging journey. Definitely some knowledge to learn from her.

When i received the answers from Pat, i had the same feeling as you do. How well she crafted her answer really show her gift in writing.

Thanks a lot for visiting and commenting. Have a great day.

      Hi Linda

Thanks for visiting Lye’s blog and staying to comment. I felt Lyes’ questions were well-thought out and I enjoyed answering them.

Glad you could take something away from the interview. It’s encouraging to know when someone stops by and the post has meant something to them.

As Lye says, he is also meeting new people and his blog is getting known by a wider circle of bloggers.

As we started blogging about the same time, we have been supporting each other’s blogs and encouraging one another in our blogging journey.

Thanks for joining the conversation. Much appreciated.

    Hey Patricia,

You are just one amazing lavender and social queen! Are you flattered now? :D But honestly, you’ve just been everywhere. I’ve noticed you around health blogs too and being everywhere is really key to interaction.

I think there are some days where I just can’t seem to comment a lot and some days words just flow. For me this year, my objective is to reach out to even more blogs (which I know you’ve been doing really well)

Thanks for sharing with us your thoughts and keep being the lavender queen that we all love :D

Thanks Bryan for visiting Lye’s blog. And thanks for those encouraging words. You are very kind.

I am becoming more discerning in the blogs I am visiting and staying to join the conversation. With meeting new bloggers through Twitter or on other blogs, I tend to return to blogs where there is interaction and where the blog owner replies to comments.

Also, with my fledgling business I need to be visiting experienced marketing blogs to learn from those who are waling the walk. So as my blog and my business go to another level I will be concentrating on being productive and remaining on that steep learning curve to continue to work towards my 2011 goals.

I’ve probably been here some time ago, but this must be the first time I commented here. I also bookmarked the site for my regular rounds. :)

Like I’ve said in Patricia’s blog, she’s a phenomena in the blogging world because she covered a lot of ground in such a short time. Not so long ago, she didn’t know what the word ‘blog’ is. Now, she’s being interviewed in another blog. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of these days, we’ll all be seeing her interviewed on tv. :)

      Hi James,

Great to know that my site is worth bookmarking for. That’s a big complement

If she keep on doing all the right things, we will surely see that happen. Probably we won’t be able to watch her on tv as most likely it will be cast in Australia :)

Thanks for dropping by and joining the conversation.

Too funny. I can assure you that no-one will be seeing me on TV in Australia or anywhere else in the near future lol

Thanks for the kind words and for stopping by Lye’s blog and staying to comment. Appreciated. Hope things are going well for you too.
