Why You Are Losing Out Without A Gravatar (And How to Create One)

Gravatar

My previous post talked about why i prefer less traffic as i hate spamming comments. Under the comment section, Steve Scott‘s comment brings out one important point with spammers, that is they normally don’t have an avatar. He mentioned people who include avatar are considered “real” people while spammers do not. From what i have noticed, even bloggers who have a decent blog do not have avatars.

I am very surprised until now people are still giving Gravatar a miss. Come on, it’s not that difficult to set up one (I will show you how to create one later in this post). Maybe you are shy in nature. Well, you don’t have to include your photo if you do not want to. You can use a picture to reflect what your blog is all about. We are talking about branding here. It’s time to get one if you do not have.

What is a Gravatar?

First lets understand what is a Gravatar. Gravatar stands for globally recognized avatar. It is an image which associate with your email address and follows you whenever you are making a comment or posting on your blog. An example is my Gravatar you can find below.

My Gravatar

As you can see, that is the picture i am using when i comment in my own blog or other blogs as long i am using the same email address. An image tells a thousand words and a little Gravatar is going to make a big difference. If you are still not convinced why you should get a Gravatar, this is why.

Why you are losing out without a Gravatar

If you are serious in building a successful online venture, then having a Gravatar is all part of the game. You are losing on four areas if you are not willing to get one.

  • You won’t be consider as comment spammers

More and more bloggers are seeing commentators without a Gravatar as one who publish spam comments. Steve Scott has mentioned that in his comment to my previous post. Mavis Nong is also giving a shout in her recent post, requesting people to use a Gravatar if they want to feature in her blog.

Of course there are others who are spammers but also having a Gravatar. At least having yours will give you more pros than cons. You won’t receive the death sentence without giving a chance to tell who you are.

  • It is associated with your branding

Part of our blogging mission is to create our own online brand and this is what Gravatar can help you with. As a blogger, you know branding is important to your success. You are easily recognizable when you leave a comment in other blogs. It is especially essential when you are leaving a comment in a A-list blog flooded with comments.

Not only you need to stand out with a valuable comment but a Gravatar that brings out who you are tells people about your site and what does it brings to them. Just imagine your name is John, out of a seas of “John” how can the blog owner recognize you if you don’t have a Gravatar.

  • Having a Gravatar encourages relationship

If you have no branding image means there is no identity from you. There isn’t any people who is willing to develop an online relationship with you. I constantly see some familiar faces in my comments and immediately recognize who they are.

I tend to be more willing to check out their site as they give me the “real” feeling they are human.

  • It increases credibility

What is credibility? Credibility is the quality of power to inspire belief and trust. Gaining people’s trust in the blogosphere can be a tricky task. You need to provide lots of value to show your authority on the subject. An empty image accompany your valuable comment does not increase your credibility at all. It diminishes your authority on the topic.

Are you convinced to get one now? I can only think of the benefits and you have plenty to lose if you are still hesitating in getting one. I wonder how many of you do not know how to create your own avatar. If you google it, there is a lot of information you can find. Nevertheless, I will show you how to get yours below.

    Lye,

Great post and well said. I am glad i gave you a little inspiration to write this in my last comment.

“Credibility” is the perfect word for it. Not that I think -every- person w/o a gravatar is a spammer, but having one shows a lot more professionalism (and 95% of spammers do not have one)

There are many great reasons to spend just a few minutes to get one! Great points and a great tutorial for those who do not have one!

      Hi Steve,

When i read your comment, i know i have to write a post on this.

I want to encourage those real bloggers to get a Gravatar even they are casual bloggers. There is nothing to lose. It can only help them if they create one.

I wish i have made things easier with step by step tutorial and there is no further excuse for them.

Thanks for dropping by and the comments.

    Hi Lye,

You’re right. If you don’t use Gravatar then you’re certainly missing your branding technique. By using Gravatar you can force people to recognize you or your service.

The word is “recognition” and you have pointed out the most important point to have a Gravatar.

      Thanks for the comments.

      Hi Sam,

That’s how i feel when i see a comment without a Gravatar. I am thinking of writing a comment policy stating comment without Gravatar will be deleted. I need to give some consideration on doing this.

      Thanks for the comments.

    Hi, Lye,
the reasons you mentioned were exactly the ones why I wanted a gravatar of my own. And you are right, it is very easy and quick to do it, as it gives more credibility…and isn’t it always better to see who are you talking to?
Somehow, bloggers without gravatar seem to me as if they are less creative, although it doesn’t have to do much with creativity, but rather more with expression. Anyway, the point is – having a gravatar is one of the best ways to get exposure.

      Hi Kristina,

It’s just few minutes taken to create one. I don’t know what’s stopping people. I really can’t think of any advantages when you don’t have one. Most importantly it’s easy recognizable when you need to stand out from others.

      Thanks for the comments.

    Hey Lye,
I don’t understand how any blogger who is trying to earn online and build a brand doesn’t use a gravatar.

I recognize people through their Gravatars and I prefer that they have a picture of themselves as opposed to an image or logo.

      Hi Justin,

I don’t think we will ever understand their mentality.

I prefer to see the face too but i guess if the logo you used is associated with the brand of your blog, that’s just fine. Like Alex Whalley, i like his Gravatar as it brings out his blog image everytime i see his.

Thanks for taking the time to join in the discussion.

    Hi Lye Kuek Hin,

You know, many people don’t understand the importance of having a gravatar when blogging.
On the internet, we’re all more or less anonymous, but a gravatar gives us back a little humanity, and blogger like to see real people commenting, not robots.
It only takes two minutes to make one, why wouldn’t you!?

This is total B.S. I’m sorry. As soon as I signed up for Gravatar, all of my comments on blogs are considered spam. I can’t seem to disassociate my email with Gravatar. And I’ve sent several emails to them with no response. I’m doing all I can to keep people from joining it.

Ah, you see, my previous comment from my main email address didn’t take. Check it — it’s in your spam folder.

      Hi Erika,

Relax, it’s not uncommon to find your comments go to spam folder. I believe thats a small issue. So far i have not heard anyone complaining except you. There are too many benefits not to have a Gravatar.

      Thanks for the comments.

I also read a discussion in Stacy’s blog. All of you are right with all your points. As for me, it’s more comfortable to talk to somebody whom I can see even in a picture. Most of the times, I have that negative impression to those Faceless commentators. Concerns like how would I build up a good relationship with others if I don’t even have that simple connection with them so Gravatar is highly recommended to everybody. It’s something for sure!

As much as Gr-avatars are good it really does not mean that someone without one is a spammer. There are many benefits that come with them but it should really be a personal choice.
