One Commenting Tactic That You(I) May Have Missed To Make Ourself Stand Out

Add Your Comment

Who doesn’t love comments? Bloggers live their lives on comments, do blog commenting everyday to attract more traffic and replying to comments in your blog almost everyday. Comments, comments we just can’t do without it.

Blog commenting is one good way to promote links to your blog/website. It is also essential if you want to network with bloggers you like or blogs you visit daily. A lot of bloggers have mentioned about the benefits of commenting so i will not elaborate further here. If you have never do commenting in other blogs since you start blogging, i will be very surprise.

Common Commenting Tactic

In normal case, you visit a blog, read a post and then proceed straight to the comment form to leave your comments. That’s what most people do right? You may also aim to be the first to comment as you will have a bigger chance to get your blogs visited. What if there are thirty, forty or even fifty comments before you?  That’s alright, you may think, i just want to leave my thoughts behind.

How many of you actually read all the comments in a post? I do. Yes i heard you. Majority of you may answer you do read all the comments in a post. Well you should know yourself better than i do.

The next question i want to ask is how many of you actually join in the discussion and reply to some of the comments in front of you? Er…i think no. If you haven’t been doing that, this is one comment tactic that you have missed to make yourself stand out.

Blend Into Blog Community

Blog commenting is not something that you read a post, leave a comment and then forget about it. Think about it, you are not just connecting with the blog owner but also to the rest of his/her visitors. In other words, you are in a blogging community that each blog has amassed.

What is a blog community?  A blog community is a group of interacting bloggers found in the same blog(That’s my definition). They are always interacting, promoting, sharing, commenting and discussing in each other’s blog. This means repeat visitors and consistent traffic in your blog.

You want to be part of the blogging community. Not someone who just passes by, leaves a trail and then disappear. I have not been commenting lately and i know i am missing out. No choice for me, i have my priorities. But not for you, you need to be involve in the blogs you like and blend into that blog community.

The Missed Commenting Tactic

As i have mentioned on top that you need to reply to comments made by other commentators, not only leaving your comments and move on. I am using The Sales Lion blog by my friend Marcus Sheridan as an example. Macus has amassed a huge blogging community in his blog. If you are a regular visitor, you know his post is never short of comments. Every post he publish has an average seventy to eighty comments. Some even has 195 comments as you can find in this post. I love to read the comments posted by his readers. There are a lot interactive and insightful comments after each post. It’s just like reading some mini posts.

Out of his commentators, Davina K Brewer is one blogger whom i admire. Why? She is not always the first to comment but she is the master of this commenting tactic that most of you have missed. Let me use Marcus Sheridan’s latest post “The One Great Key to Building a Blog Community and Changing Lives” as an example.

This is not Davina’s comment to the post itself. It’s a reply or rather conversation to the comment made by Marlee Ward. There are more replies further down and you can see John Falchetto and JK Allen joining in the conversation. Davina’s comment is right down in the middle.

Further down you can still see her replying to some of the comments made by other commentators.  This is a great commenting tactic that we can apply. You can actually see her on top, in the middle and below. So what if you are not the first to leave your comments. By joining in the comments on top, you will still be seen by other visitors.

You maybe wondering, they know each other well thus they are able to start a conversation within the comments. Do you believe you have to know somebody before you can make a reply to other people’s comment? You don’t have to. Think back when you made the first comment in each individual blog you visited. Do you know the blog owner? A definite no. Bloggers are a friendly bunch of people. As long as

  • You do not spam
  • Your reply is full of insight
  • Voice your views if you have different ideas

You are actually free to make a presence of yourself. This is how Davina catch my attention through a pool of comments. In fact, using this commenting tactic have several benefits that i can think of.

  • The blog owner will be grateful to you for expanding a conversation and building a live community.
  • Blogger whom you reply to will take note of you.
  • Other readers tend to visit your blog as you easily stand out among the rest.
  • You can easily be the top commentator if you made several comments consistently in each and every post.

These are the four benefits that i can think of. If you can think of additional ones, please tell us in the comment box.

A Gentle Reminder

Don’t just focus on the benefits. Remember you need to blend into the blogging community. Most importantly do not spam. Just leave your own comments if you have nothing valuable to add on. You also have to exert some control else people may find you a nuisance if you reply to every comment in the post. However this is one commenting tactic that easily makes you stand out if people loves what you are replying to others, which helps to bring in more traffic for your blog/site.

Do you think this commenting tactic helps you to stand out?

Have you tried this commenting tactic?

Do you always leave a comment and move on, not blending into the blog community?

Your thoughts?

This is in fact a great “commenting tactic” if you want to call it that way. As you lay it out, and very well, I think that is a great way of building relationship and engaging with like minded people. I have to admit though that you have to have a little of it within you. Like Davina, for example, she makes every comment fun and engaging. I must say that IO am lacking behind using this method as I do read other peoples comment /maybe not every single one of them), and sometimes I would like to throw in my two cents :) Thumbs up Lye, good one

      Hi DiTesco,

Engaging is the purpose. That’s the most important of all. I understand not everyone has it within him/her, sometimes we just have to step out of our comfort zone and have a try.

Thanks for joining in the discussion.

Besides Davina, Bill Dorman does this too. I like what they do, but I don’t think everyone can pull this one off.

I do it rarely and only when I really have to say something that is a direct reply to the comment.

Both of them do it like in a conversation, which I love, but although I am very talkative I can’t seem to do it as good as they do :)

This is a great way to get people to notice you and then connect with them!

      Hi Brankica,

Yes, i notice Bill Dorman does it in other post. I agree not everyone can pull this off. It’s up to individual personality to make it happen but it’s a good tactic to get noticed and connect with new bloggers.

      Thanks for visiting and commenting.

This is one method that I haven’t thought about doing. Of course, I reply to comments on my own blog, but for some reason I never thought about doing it on other blogs.

Some people seem to make it seem so simple when replying to a comment, for the rest of us it takes some thought and thinking to do so. Maybe replying to comments will get easier the more I do it.

      Hi Paul,

This commenting tactic is simple but as Brankica and DiTesco had mentioned, we need to have it within us. Replying to a comment is easy but hoe do we make it interesting and full of insight is another question.

Thanks for joining in the conversation.

I didn’t know about this, this what my major problems, I’ve done this before, after reading, I do a comment and after that, leave it. that’s all, I didn’t know how important is the comment it is. and how you communicate it well to other bloggers. I didn’t know that we are a part of the community, sharing knowledge and ideas,.for now on, I will value it. thank you for this..I learned a lot of this site..

      Hi Conde,

That’s what majority of the bloggers do. I am guilty of that too, leaving a comment and then that’s it.

Being part of the community is important as your traffic will be consistent. That’s why engagement is so important.

Glad you learn something out of this post. Thanks for dropping by.

This is a great tactic, but like Brankica mentioned I don’t think everyone can pull this off.

To be honest with you, I sure wouldn’t be able to pull this off right now because of the limited time. But, I will certainly keep this is mind form now on!

Blog commenting is indeed a nice way to attract traffic as well as developing relationships with fellow bloggers. The thing is, since you own a blog, its your place and you can show up at any time to express yourself.

We have started to realized the importance of commenting more and more. I am not much of replying other’s comment but I often respond the reply to my comment by the author. Replying other’s comments sometimes feels like you are intruding the talks between the author and commenter.

That’s good as you are trying to build a network with the blog owner. It may be seem intruding. As long you have a good insightful comment, not some short sentences and you don’t do it often, it should be fine.

I admit, i don’t read the comments unless the article is extremely interesting and i know there’s gonna be a good talk between the readers. I mean, reading 50 comments of “great post, i learned a lot from it” is not my definition of well spent time.

Btw, i like when i get replies from the admin for my comments, but there are limits to this. Some comments simply don’t need replies, so the admin is forced to make a comment that looks 100% spam, just that there’s nobody there to delete it :)

I don’t think anyone will like to see “great post” type of comment in a post.
