Have you ever written a blog post, leaving it lying on your post editor, don’t know whether what to expect when you publish the post? Well, I do have those considerations sometimes. I have written a post, proofread it, check everything and waiting to press the publish button. But these questions come to my mind before i press the publish button:
- What if nobody read the post?
- What if people don’t like the post?
- What if there is no comments?
- What if people think the post is crap?
Did you ever ask yourself these questions before you publish a post? It’s quite common to develop this kind of thoughts as all our concerns are whether our post is helpful and valuable enough to attract eyeballs. Ultimately traffic is our number #1 aim for a successful blog.
Just Hit the Publish Button, For God’s Sake
Nowadays i don’t want to think too much how the post is going to be, i am eliminating all those considerations. I just need to ensure i fulfill several things before i publish my post. After i have written my post, i will do a check on this:
- I will read the post from start to the end, make sure the post has a smooth flow.
- I need to check if there is any grammatical mistakes. (I am sure i will miss a few but that’s fine)
- I need to think of a title i am happy with.
- I need to edit and shorten the premalink.
- I need to add the title and tags on All in One SEO pack.
- I have include the correct categories and tags.
If i have fulfilled the checklist above, i will just hit the publish button.
I come to realize that there is nothing in having a perfect post, blog or design. You can do everything perfect but you will still find somebody who doesn’t like your blog, post or your blog design. Too much considerations not only restrict you in doing what you suppose to do and it actually stopping what you are doing. This is a hinder to your progress.
A post which you put your heart and effort to come out may not attract any comments at all. A post which you think is average may hit a cord with the readers and become your most popular/commented post.
If you look at my most commented post on the sidebar, the post title is Comment or Retweet – Which Do You Prefer? Even though this is the most commented post but i didn’t meant for it to be. To be frank, i spent 20 minutes on this post at that time and i thought this is an average post. I was prepared to earn a few retweets and maybe a few comments.
It ended become my most commented post and had 18 retweets. I was really surprised by that. This post also attracted some search engine traffic when people search for “comments/retweets” terms. Luckily for me, i decide to publish the post even when i thought it’s just an average post.
This makes me understand you are not the one who decide whether your post becomes a hit with your readers. Your readers and visitors are the one who decide it.
Don’t Be a Perfectionist
Yes, you don’t have to be. In fact you can’t. Make sure you have a checklist before you publish your post. Once you fulfill that, hit the publish button and let your readers decide the fate of your post. Your loyal bunch of readers will not abandon you because of one post they don’t like. No bloggers can guarantee their every post is of the highest quality and attract the same number of eyeballs.
Your readers will only think about whether the post is relevant to them or not. Remember you can’t please everyone reading your blog.
I like to hear your thoughts about this.
Do you ever kill a post because you think it’s crap?
Do you have a lot of consideration before you hit the publish button?
What makes you decide to publish your post?
Do you have a post that is a hit but you think it’s average?

I’m with you on this one. I tend to spend more time coming up with the idea and the flow of my post, then I write as naturally as I can. I don’t agonize over the finished product, but I do read it over to make sure it flows.
Sometimes, I’ll feel like it’s just an average post, but the important thing is that I conveyed some information that I felt was valuable to the readers. I’m often surprised by which of my posts become popular.

Hi Richard,
Yes i agree. When we have an idea, we have to jolt it down and complete a post out of it.
That’s the reason why i say our readers will the fate of our post. We can’t control who will be reading and which post struck a cord with each individual.
Thanks for being with me and the comments. Appreciate the support Richard.

Dear Lye Kuek Hin thanks for this sometimes I feel I may be overcritical of my self and think I have to go over every post fine tunning it I might try throwing a little caution to the wind.

I think you’re quite right here, every blogger should have checklist and after checking that and satisfying himself should publish the post. No one is perfect so don’t think much about it but your approach should be honest.

Lesson learned… As a blogger you can’t predict which post will get more traffic and retweets. It’s our loyal readers who decide about it.

Unfortunately I hit the publish button first and then think: why didn’t I proofread this post. I suppose the ideal lies somewhere between immediate gratification and perfectionism.

Hi Riley,
I just have to make sure that my post has minimum errors and i will hit publish. But i guess our readers will forgive us for small errors if that doesn’t happen too often.
Thanks for joining in the discussion.

Hello,
I like your post very much. I must admit that I have this problem. I write a post, then I read it several times, and although I like it I just don’t publish it. Sometimes I just think that people will not like my post as I do. And after all these steps I delete it.
After I have read your post, I realize that I threw away potentially good work. Thank you for your suggestion. I will hit that publish button more often from now on.

Hi Daca,
Give every post a chance, that’s my thinking. Unless i really think it’s crap, else most of my post will be able to see the light in my blog.
Glad you are taking something out of this post.
Thanks for taking the time to drop by.

Lye, nice tips here. I think commenting is also something that makes your posts more popular! If you just post an article and go to sleep, your article will sleep too. Thanks for sharing.

Having a checklist for a blog post is a great idea. I’ve never been so disciplined in my approach with blogging, and my style has been a bit more organic (read “off-the-cuff”, lol) than listed here, but I see the merit.
When I let my doubts kill a blog post, it’s always in the early stages when I’m coming up with ideas. So far, I haven’t had the courage to go so far as to write it out. =)

Hi Delena,
You should write it out for your creative juice to flow naturally. You wouldn’t have know the post may be relevant to your readers.
I just ensure i fulfill certain things before i hit the publish button, don’t consider that as a checklist though
Thanks for visiting and commenting.

This happens to me frequently, and in the beginning it caused real problems and stress. But then i figured out that i actually worked a lot on that article, invested time in writing it the best i could, and it would be a waste not to publish it. Even if it’s the worst article i’ve ever written, someone will still read it and appreciate it.

Hi Antonia,
You won’t really know the outcome unless you publish it right. In fact a crap post in a while will not see your readers abandon you straight away. So no harm pressing the publish button.
Thanks for the comments.

You know, i actually don’t really care of the negative impact my post could have on some readers. It’s true i write for them, but they’re on my blog because they like my writing. If my writing somehow changes in time, they’re free to move somewhere else, other will come in their place.
You can only write what you feel and what you enjoy, you can’t make compromises in this area.
At least, this is what i believe.

Hi Martin,
We simply can’t please everyone on our site. There are bound to have posts that do well and posts that fare poorly.
As long the words comes from our heart, we should share with our readers.

What i do is read it once and push the button. I used to get worried about the grammar mistakes that managed to slip by me, but there are times when even if i read the article 2-3 times i still miss some, so i just stopped wasting time with this, it’s not worth it. Nobody’s expecting me to be perfect.

Well written post. I think you are very right. If you think a lot about what people are going to say or do when you publish a post then you might never publish any. It is good to do what you feel is best because at the end of the day you will never please everyone.
