Lye’s note: I am really impressed when my fellow countryman Jimmy send me a guest post on how to blog effectively with a great routine. Jimmy is a regular visitor of this blog and i took the chance to ask him for another guest post. Coincidently, this post is a great follow up to the previous post by Adam. A Privilege from My Fellow Blogger

My fellow countryman, Lye has prompted me to guest post on his blog again. I am honored by this request. Even though I blog about personal development, I still find that the technical knowledge I gain from blogs like his is immensely valuable to my site too.

As such, I hope to contribute a little of my blogging expertise to his site regularly too. Most of my writing will be focus on the psychology to better blogging. I hope you will find these articles useful to keep blogging.

Blogging can be Discouraging at Times

Today I would like to talk about how you can stay motivated with your blogging. Blogging is a long term, little result commitment at the start. The only progress you will see is your increasing blog post and comment count over months of hard work. Main result like money and business do not come overnight. This is where the motivation to stay the course is so crucial.

I like to provide a quote at this point to encourage you if you feel like giving up;

“Rewards only come to those who are willing to ride it out.”

Here are seven ways to stay motivated with your blogging.

Seven Ways to Stay Motivated

1. Blog Your Passion

If you cannot sit down and come out with at least 50 blog post titles, than you better rethink your blogging niche. If you blog your passion you will never run out of ideas to write about. I suggest that you do this exercise every month just to make sure that you are on the right track. Nothing is more futile than wasting 6 months blogging for something you did not believe in or like. Identifying your passion is key.

2. Have an Attitude to Learn from Others

Every blogger from experts to beginners are always learning. When you adopt this form of learning mode, you will reap far more dividends than been focused solely on money. Every blogger offers something unique even on similar subjects. You need to explore every blog with an open mind to get the most out of your blogging. When you realize that you have progressed by learning from others, your motivation will also grow.

3. Take Small Steps of Progress

There are tons of changes and improvements needed to reach your blogging targets. Even ProBloggers did not get to where they are in a short time. But they had a secret that you and I could replicate – take small steps of progress towards your success and targets. Can you implement a new widget today that enhances your blog? Did you comment enough for the day? Have you submitted or planned for a guest post this weekly? Did you share your post on Facebook and Twitter today? Concentrate on small steps on a daily basis and your blogging success will come.

4. Set Milestone Goals

He who fails to plan is planning to fail. Part of planning is to set achievable milestone goals. Set long term yearly goals. Then work backwards to quarterly and monthly goals. Further distill your progress to weekly and daily goals. Once you have these set, just focus on the daily goals and forget the rest for the moment. This should keep you focus for maximum effectiveness and motivation for success. Sometimes looking too far ahead can discourage you often.

When a marathoner runs his race, he does not see the end point, he sees only the next lamp post or check point. This makes it more difficult for him to fall out. Similarly, when you blog, count your next lamp posts as your next post, next comment, next improvement, next series and so on.

5. Guest Post Often

This one single strategy is the key to expanding your reach with your blog. When you guest post correct, you will see your traffic spike. This form of results does wonders to your morale and motivation. Recently, I finally had one guest post featured on TinyBuddha. My regular traffic was less than 100 visits a day before that. Guess what was my traffic after that post? For the next two days, I had more than 1000 visitors to my site. How is that for motivation for blogging?

But guest posting can be tough. You need to make sure your content is some of the best and you have to be prepared to ‘give’ these posts away. But in the end, I think the hard work is worth it when popular bloggers feature you. It shows that they trust you.

6. Write Blog Series

Committing yourself to a series will also force you to be regular and motivated in your blogging. It is very easy to write a post for publishing, but planning an actually writing a good post series requires more effort. The good thing is once your have started, you cannot stop not matter how lazy you become. You have to push through otherwise you will lose regular followers to your series.

7. Start a Blog Diary

When bloggers start their journey, they often forget about themselves in their quest to create content. Learn to document your blogging journey down somewhere. For the first month, what did you do? How many posts did you write and publish? What need widgets did you install? Did some heavy weight bloggers visit your blog? Chronicle all these down. The power of this lies in your reviews. When you look back once in a while when motivation is lacking, reading your own blogging progress will reveal your milestones and goals achieved. That is very motivating.

I am sure there are many more blogging tips to stay motivated. These are seven that I use and find most empowering when it comes to motivating myself.

Have you hit a solid wall in your blogging so far? How did you deal with this depressing period? What are some of your tips to stay motivated? Hey, please know that it is perfectly fine to go through a dry spell in your blogging. The secret is knowing that you can always bounce back with the right attitude and strategies.

Keep blogging…

      Tushar my friend,

Send as many request for guest posts as possible. Bloggers are known to be very helpful. Might be a good start to connect with non-high profile bloggers first. Those with an average of 20-30 comments per post would be a good start.

BTW have you make guest post writing a routine yet?

Blogging about your passion has been the top most priority that most bloggers recommend to newbie bloggers. Maybe because they already proved that blogging just for the sake of money can’t take anybody nowhere since blogging is in fact not an easy way to earn money.

      Hi Kerby,

It took a while to figure out what I was good at and enjoyed doing. When I first started out, I was looking at my work areas. That’s logical, I thought. But as the days past, I ran out of ideas. That’s when I I knew I was in the wrong niche.

Today, I recommend that before anyone start, you should think of at least 50 post title ideas. The second thing is that you should have insights of new post titles on a daily basis.

    Hey Jimmy,

I was just over at Justin’s blog where you had done another guest post. Boy, you do get around. Great that Lye had you do one here as well. Very well done!

I couldn’t agree with you more on all the topics you included. As far as the guest posting goes, boy is that time consuming. But I love that you wrote one and had so many hits to your blog. The recognition can be crazy good. I have no doubt you’ll be getting a lot of visits from these two recent posts as well.

I can’t believe I’m going to say this but I got nothing. You’ve covered it all pretty much, I don’t have anything to include but great job!

Just hope you both are having a really great week!

      Yes Adrienne,

I have changed Strategy a bit. No more posting daily on my post. It was actually a suggestion from Steve Scott to do two guest post per week and three generic post for my own site. So this is something I am doing now.

It is all about getting down to writing which can be time consuming. Sometimes, I feel like tearing my head out because I am so pressed for time in so many areas of my work and family as well.

Wow, I’ve never posted every single day on my blog. I started out posting 3 times a week and just earlier this year backed away to twice a week. You are a brave soul for even attempting that schedule.

Writing quality content for other blogs is what I find mind boggling. I applaud you for taking that on. I do know you’ve done a great job on the few I just visited this week, this one included. Keep up the excellent work. No pressure! :-)

I believe that staying motivated is very important when it comes to blogging. As if the blogger can’t find the motivation to write, his readers will feel the boredom and it’s not a good thing to have!

You are right. Staying motivated is key. When you are not motivated, your writing will reflect that and your readers pick up on that.

You have hit the right point here. There is no motivation for blogging if there are very few visits. Even when I started blogging there used be 0 visits for three days but then I continued updating new posts and gradually the traffic increased.

As much as many people get into blogging so as to make some extra income it is important that you have a passion for the area you want to be blogging about. This helps you to stay motivated in whatever topic you are writing on.
