Twitter is one of the most popular social media platform for bloggers. If you are just starting out using Twitter, normally you will tend to follow people who are interested in the same topics as you are. After that, how do you go from there? Do you tend to make use of the Twitter search to search for people based on your interest? There are actually 2 simple ways to get more followers.

Based on the top 100 ranking in Twitterholic, you can see ranking #1 is Britney Spears who has over 5 million followers. Most of the people at the top mostly consist of celebrity and TV host such as Oprah Winfrey. If you are interested in celebrity or tv shows, then you may want to choose to follow them.
It is advisable though not to blindly follow all of them. Follow those that you are really interested in following especially if you are building an online business. The reason is that you need to target your right audience who has interest in your products. Do not just follow and unfollow later as we surely do not want to recommend “twitter follower spammers”. Do make you sure that you resist the temptation of following everyone if you are a newbie as it doesn’t look good with you following 300 people and having 0 followers. Make sure you post some tweets before you click to follow anyone.
Target the right users to follow
Follow this rule if you want to increase following the right people who has the same interest with you and their followers. Please refer to the example that i am going to show you. Lets take a look at the twitter page of new media and social evangelists Douglas Idugbow.
He has followers of over149.5k followers but also following a little more than 140k users. Most likely he is using a tool which automated to follow anyone who follows him. If you have a blog talking about social media you may choose to follow him. However you may find it difficult to identify and targeting his following who has the same interest in social media whom you want to follow also. Lets take a look on another twitter page, this time web design blog SmashingMagazine.
Web design site Smashing Magazine has near to 230k followers but you can see they have a following of 443 users. Mostly likely they are interested in the updates that these 4oo over users tweets and most likely web design related topics. You can actually browse through their following and follow those that are related to what you are blogging in this case web design topics. This is a simple way to start getting more followers and it really depends on whether you are a internet marketer or just a twitter who tweet about your daily life. If you are working on an online business, you can try out the method above and go to the twitter top ranking site to look for the right people to follow. This will expose you more to their followers who probably will be interested in your blog also.
Please take note that in order to continuously increase your followers, you need to interact often with your followers and provide value just like blogging. Twitter is consider blogging too as it is often called “Microblogging”.

Well explained. One other way I use to get more followers on twitter is to automate my tweets to go out all the time. I use a free tool called twaitter.com. You should check it out and see how it works

I like the idea about taget following. I myself use to buy followers from fiverr and I think is a great way of getting many followers fast when you need it. But after reading your post I maybe will be more careful!
