Why Being Successful Will Lose You Readers And Why It Wouldn’t Hurt

Success with a price

Are you kidding me Lye? No i am not kidding. Every blogger in the blogosphere would like to see their blogs taking off and become successful. It’s every bloggers’ dream to be an A-list blogger who is respected and followed by numerous others. Then why being successful will see you losing some of your readership and why it wouldn’t hurt. Let me explain.

What Would Become Of You If You Have Reached A-list Status

1. You will be extremely busy

First of all, if you are able to become an A-list blogger, you are consider an expert in your respective niche. As you know every secret inside out in your heart, there is a tendency you will develop plenty of ideas or projects to work on them. That spread your time thin and you will find yourself no time to do your routine blogging tasks.

  • Lesser respond to comments

By this time, every post that you rolled out will be flooded with comments. Some may be valuable and some may just trying to get some traffic or backlinks back to their blog. It’s extremely normal. You do not have time to respond to any of the comments as you rather spend the time focusing on your projects.

  • Your own voice will be lesser

Since you are busier, readers will find more guest posts over your own voice. Guest post is a good way to give your readers a different perspective and a great way to keep your blog updated. There shouldn’t be any problem in getting a guest post when you have a successful blog. Once you are focus in other projects, time will be spend lesser to post on your blog. Your readers wants to hear from you as they always do. They do not want to hear from others in another voice.

2. The expectation of you will be higher

When you are consider an expert, the expectation of your blog and you from your readers will be higher. People not only expect you to maintain but actually to improve your blog even further. If you are providing great value, they would expect to get awesome value in every post.

3. You are no longer approachable and friendly

There are just too many request flooding to your email everyday and you have a hard time in answering the questions anymore. You just can’t satisfy everyone at the same time. People will have the impression you are no longer friendly once you have reached A-list status.

The above reason alone will cause you to lose some of your loyal readers when your blog has become successful. Besides that, jealousy will also make people leave as they just can’t stand you being successful. Since there are a lost in readership, why is it not hurting you?

Why It Wouldn’t Hurt to Lose Readers When You Are Successful

1. Those leaving are the minorities

The people whom you lost only contain a minority of your overall readership. Majority of your visitors who follow you all the way will stand by you and understand there are some you need to sacrifice when you become successful.

2. It’s hard to ignore you

True enough, your blog is able to provide lots and lots of value to people. This is the reason why your blog is popular and read by a huge numbers of visitors. Some people may not be to understand why you suddenly respond or post lesser. As long as your objective of providing solutions to people is unchanged, they will actually find it hard to ignore your blog.

3. Your brand is established

Once your blog brand is establish, you will lose some readers but at the same time you will also gain new readers. The percentage of new readers is definitely higher that the readers you lost.

Why Are We Critical

While we are critical of successful bloggers who seldom respond to comments and make use of guest posts to maintain their blog, we are just looking at things from our angle. Our angle from below may just focus on tip of an iceberg. The A-list bloggers who are right on top tend to look at things differently. They may be able to look at things at different angle, look wider and further.

They have their own reasons for not being able to respond to comments and email as what they have used to do. I am just wondering those who stop visiting because of the reasons above, are they mostly bloggers? Search engine traffic normally seldom comments and just left after they find what they want.

Conclusion

No matter where we are at any level in blogging, we should always remember our objectives and goals why we set up our blog. As long as we stick to our principles and objective, we would be able to sustain most of our visitors in our blog. Methods and procedure can be changed but the overall principles cannot be change as you progress. Try to get this point across whenever you can and i believe your readers will understand your actions you have taken and will continue supporting your blog.

Hey Lye, I think you just did a great post on handling criticisms… because i just arrived from Oni’s blog on how to deal with criticisms as an entrepreneur too.

Yeap. I’m 100% agreeable of what you are saying now. We can’t please everyone is the world. I read a quote before. it says like the no.1 reason for failure is to try pleasing everyone in the world. Sometimes, i know that this is hard for people to understand because we never want to be ‘unliked’ by others. It’s hard for me when i started out. Really.

But i learn the hard-truth, and understand that if you’re successful, you will lose some of your friends. :) Anyway, i love what you said Lye, those who leave you, are just the minority :)

2 blog posts in a day strengthened my mindset :) It’s really great to hang out with A-bloggers like you Lye :)

      Hi Ding Neng,

Oni’s post is a killer. I like that post too. We surely can’t please everyone. We just need to stick to the things that we think it’s right to do.

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. Great to have your support too.

    Hi Lye

I understand what you are saying but I hope my loyal readers will still be interacting with me and I with them when my blog is growing to the point where it is very successful.

Hesham from Famousbloggers still responds to comments and RT posts all the time, so I think it is possible to still do these things. Also, a lot of the bigger blogs outsource some of their work too.

Just my thoughts but I do appreciate your point of view and definitely this can happen and if some readers go and others come well so be it. I can only be me and give my best.

      Hi Patricia,

The things that Heshem did has provided a good platform for us to learn from. He is one that i respect a lot.

I believe you won’t be losing any of your readers even when your blog become successful as you always emphasize good interaction with everyone you know.

Thanks for the great support as always.

    Great points raised here Lye,
and well timed too I might add – because I am starting to wind down the blogging aspect of my online business and have been thinking about how this will affect things for me.
I am clearly far from being an Alist Blogger, but your points raised make me feel better, knowing that maybe one day it will come good :)

    Lye,

This is one of the more on point posts about successful bloggers that I’ve read. Thanks for sharing :)

As you note we see things from our perspective, rarely taking the time to think how busy some of these uber successful folks are. As a blogger’s presence expands they begin to learn why A list bloggers do things the way they do them.

    Hi Lye,
I expect that when one reaches that A-list status, they will do their best to keep up with the things that got them there. They may be less of a presence on each of their blogs, but likely they will still have the ability and desire to build good relationships with their readers.

This by far is one of the bests posts I’ve read with the topic of A-listers Lye.

It’s true, it’s impossible to keep everyone happy and readers have to understand that.

If A-listers spend all their times replying to emails, they will be to burned out to produce quality content and release new projects that keep people happy.

Darren and Gary Vaynerchuck do a great job of showing community interaction. Instead of meeting everyone one on one, they do live shows in their free time and answer questions during their live show.

In my opinion, that’s a great way to interact with your community and show you still care.

Great to see you. Thanks for giving us an idea of how the A-list bloggers works and interact with their readers. We wouldn’t have an idea figuring from below.

Thanks for dropping by and the great comments.

Thanks for this alternate view. So true.

Those visitors who comment because they appreciate the content do not really expect a response from A-list bloggers knowing how busy they are.

But I think the community who supported the blogger from the start to the top expect some acknowledgment from the blogger when they comment.

My question now is, which is best, to reply to a chosen few or not reply to anyone at all?
    :)

      Hi Bendedspoon,

We need to acknowledge, that’s for sure. Whether to reply or not is up to individual blogger. They need to work at things that work best for them.

Thanks for visiting and the support.

That’s normal. If you become popular then you will get more readers and enemy too . The important thing is what we get from it. Maybe money is some kind motivation that can keep us blogging and more success…

The success blogger keep work hard even they make much money using blog. Look at Darren Rowse , Johnchow, Yaro Starak . They are pro blogger but their work sometimes more harder than office hour people..

I think that’s the sacrifice we have to make if we are to be successful. The bloggers whom you mentioned not only make good money but they care for their readers too. It is something we can learn from them.

There is a lot of truth in what you just said, although I am still of the opinion that if one has a pretty good managed “agenda” and todo list, one should always find even a little bit of time to take that extra mile. After all no one gets to be a successful blogger without the help and support of others and giving something back even occasionally is always appreciated.
